HOLY CRAAP!" This must be the most informative single thread ever! I have only read the first 5 posts, and looked to realize it is a year old! I need to explore all the categories more often! Thanks to all. Paul

Thought I mentioned this earlier, but guess not - Textpad is the bomb! Free version is great! I paid the $29 to remove the banner when it starts up, but more to support them because the product is so useful. Another good text editor is Ultra Edit. Works particularly good for: macros, programming, or editing HTML. http://www.textpad.com

Don't think anyone has mentioned this yet ! Ultra VNC Never leave home without this software on a USB key ready to download onto any PC's I'm working with, excellent for remote access ! ""Remote Control Software for all UltraVNC is a powerful, easy to use and free software that can display the screen of another computer (via internet or network) on your own screen. The program allows you to use your mouse and keyboard to control the other PC remotely. It means that you can work on a remote computer, as if you were sitting in front of it, right from your current location."" http://www.uvnc.com/download/index.html

I like the fact that it is free, but still think its a bit limited when managing multiple connections. I use Remote Administrator which still only costs $60 a license, but offers a lot more. I have about 40-50 connections to provide support every now and then. - A phonebook to store all connections in a folder tree which can be exported/imported. Excellent to backup all connections. - Very user friendly file transfer screen to transfer files from host to viewer and vice versa. When I am done or before I begin a session I transfer the latest files without notice of the customer. - Ability to log on/off/restart remotely without need of remote help. (service runs before logon). Safes you or someone else the walk. - Helpful chat client to communicate with a remote user without having to make a call when connecting/disconnecting. I usually begin and end without calling the customer, just give a chat message when starting/finishing. - You can configure users with different rights on the server. I usually give the customer a local "view only" account. - Remote screen can be blanked and keyb/mouse can be disabled by choice during connection. I usually leave them enabled so the remote user can point me on something in case of a problem. Of course only the server is paid for, the viewer is unlicensed. Never came across anything better.

I used to be all about VNC years ago. Hate to say it, but if you're in a Windows environment Remote Desktop is just better. I use Gotomeeting all the time though! It's not free, but very useful. IT departments will usually throw a fit about leaving a Gotomypc connection open (or block it), but be ok with gotomeeting. Works out well for: presentations, training, and troubleshooting if you happen to be across the Internet without anything pre-configured between 2 or more users.

Mircosoft power calculator - replace the wimpy calculator that comes with windows. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...ppowertoys.mspx There are a few other power toys there, one that's useful is the task switcher that gives a thumbnail preview of your windows when using Alt-Tab to swtich applications. I use Minicap (freeware) in my HMI applications. It is a minute screencapture program, that works with commandline parameters. The point is that when you run it from within the HMI application, there will be no user dialog, and it terminates itself automatically. In this way, my users can anytime activate a hotkey, and then a GIF with time-and-date of the current window will be stored in the desired location. Perfect for sending via email for troubleshooting. It is how printscreen should have worked. Great thread !

I do not think I saw Soluto (http://www.soluto.com) on the list but it seems to be a good program. It bills itself as Anti frustration software. It allows you, among other things to delay or pause certain startup programs until later in the uptime so your system boots up faster instead of being bogged down by everything attempting to start at once. You can see all your startup programs and the time they add to your boot time. If you are unsure what to do with a startup program, you can compare what other Soluto users have done for each of your startup programs The program is a beta and is currently free though there is plans to expand it. Has anyone used this? Also does anyone know if there is a way to setup a profile the puts it back to auto detect IP?

I don't know if it's what you are looking for, but I downloaded a batch file here on the mrplc website that will pop up a menu to let you switch between IP addresses. Selecting the "1" will configure you back to auto detect, too. IP Configuration Batch File Edited by Steve Etter

Snagit: IMO, one of the best screenshot program out there. Also can vid cap your screen. Not free, but very useful. Includes editor. CamStudio: Fork of Camtasia before Camtasia went commercial. Picture Resizer: Batch resize images to a width (i.e. make an 800x600 copy of your 10MP image to use in a Word document. Help keep your document sizes manageable. Diptrace: Schematic and PCB layout. Not free, but suprisingly inexpensive. PCB123: Free Schematic and PCB layout from Sunstone. Oddly, they let you order boards directly from the software... Angry IP Scanner: Scan an entire Range of IPs, 63 threads at a time. Also a port scanner. Hamachi: Free secure hosted VPN, different topologies other than mesh now available. Does anyone want my list of PCB sources?
