Rslinx classic 2.5, I cant install/configure 1747-PIC/ACI + Driver. It always comes up with "Fatal Error Initiliazing Device Driver". What does it mean. We used to able to configure it. We're using Windows XP Sp2. Thanks

Does the computer have a real serial port? It will NOT work without one.

Yes, it does. Everything is buoght and installed legally by our company IT people. It could be XP that is upgraded to SP3. PIC driver used to work before. We've been using 1747 UIC since then. At our company IT guys take care of all the installations, everything is legal. Right now we are using HP pentium 4 laptop with 2USB 1 serial. We are getting a new laptop soon. What about if it comes with Vista, Rockwell software works fine with Vista? Thanks

My comment about a real serial port has nothing to do with being legal or illegal. ?? Yes SP3 will be a problem ( see link below for more on that) Windows Vista does not support the 1747-PIC/AIC+ driver ( see links below) But sense you have the 1747-UIC then why bother with the old driver? http://rockwellautomation.custhelp.com/cgi...amp;p_topview=1 http://rockwellautomation.custhelp.com/cgi...amp;p_topview=1 SP3 : work around see link below http://www.plctalk.net/qanda/showthread.php?t=45843 PIC driver setup PDF: http://www.plctrainer.net/PICDriverAllenBradley.pdf

Can you tell me how to get around the serial port problem? I too can not install the pic driver. I need to talk to a panelview and can not get it to communicate. I have been trying to use the 9300-USBS with no success. Our laptops are leased and we have no input on what we get, and none of them have serial ports any longer. I am trying to talk with corp IT to get a few with serial ports but that will be down the road. Any help is appreciated. Will

Buy a 1747-UIC. The PIC cannot be used with a USB adapter. It will only work with a real serial port. http://rockwellautomation.custhelp.com/cgi...p?p_faqid=54621 Paul

It is a 2711 K6C5, using RS232 Communications. Have it tied to a 5/03 on ch 0.

Then take okiePC's advice. Or a memory card.

I know this thread is old, but I thought this might be valuable to add for anyone in my situation. Reading these posts (and the linked ones) it was not obvious where the serenum.sys file was or where I could go to find the SP2 version of the file. Here's how I fixed it. Since I had trouble finding the sp2 version, I did some searching around on the web and found it here: http://dllexedown.com/bbs/board.php?bo_tab...&wr_id=1948 I'm unfamiliar with that site, but the file checked good on virustotal.com. If that link doesn't work, I put it on my personal site here: www.4micah.net/serenum.sys I simply backed up the live version of serenum.sys by renaming it with a .bak extension, then copied the sp2 version into the folder (windows/system32/drivers). It asked if I wanted to overwrite the existing one. I said yes. Now my PIC works fine in SP3.

Having gone through this with Tech Support at great lenght and great pain, I will add this bit on the PIC driver in Linx. It was designed pre-windows and so it basically expects a DOS environment. When Windows came along, it did not respect the RS232 design spec. Therefore the PIC has a fundamental conflict with any Windows OS. That is why you must reboot when the PIC is installed in Linx (so the PIC can capture the serial port away from Windows). If you use the PIC in a Windows OS, DO NOT EXPECT YOUR PC TO DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT IS SERIAL...IT WILL NOT DO IT IN DEPENDABLE FASHION! So I will once again suggest that the solution is to stay away from the PIC at all cost (it is just not worth the trouble). Having used the 1747-UIC, I strongly recommend it. It can be a RS232 port for what ever you want and it is DH485 with a regular ethernet cable. And it has a Windows compatible driver in Linx. Best Regards, Bob A.
