  4. New Engineer Seeking Advice for PLC

The best way to learn PLCs is to find a machine builder who has outstanding Sr. Controls Engineers who care about you and want to mentor you by teaching you the ropes of PLC programming. This way you learn project to project different programming concepts and go from there. Not only do you need to understand programming PLC ladder but you need to know some basic knowledge of electrical interfacing and I/O signaling, like digital and analog.
  5. You made a GAME with an HMI? Ok...I am no longer worthy....
  6. Picture Software

I use SnagIt. Yes I purchased it, but it's worth it because I send lots of screen shot emails.
  7. Fighting the Flab

They make a TT robot? kewl!
  8. I would recommend you get a job as a technician on the floor assembling OEM machinery. Find a local machine builder in your area, or "OEM". See if you can start in the assembly department and have the guys on the floor mentor you about building panels, wiring, etc. Once you have an understanding of the machines and machine building, then you can become a designer.
  9. MicroLogix and Wireless IO

The prosoft module that I pointed to, I probably should not have. When I originally pointed to prosoft, I was mostly referring to the wireless "industrial" products they have. The wireless I/O module prosoft has, is mostly a 1734-AENT, but with a wireless connection. As far as my understanding goes, the AENT modules is for a 5000 series PLC only. I don't think a 500 PLC can be configured for this device.
  10. MicroLogix and Wireless IO

Read what AB says here if you choose Ethernet I/P http://literature.rockwellautomation.com/idc/groups/literature/documents/ap/enet-ap004_-en-e.pdf Then read here: http://www.prosoft-technology.com/training/whitepapers/Applying-Wireless-to-Ethernet-IP-Systems.pdf Then to say, I have used the prosoft repeaters for one application for EthernetNET I/P and they seemed to work ok for a rotating module I had that all I could get through the rotating module was a 120 vac slip ring. Or you can get the wireless point I/O adapter, that has the wireless built in. http://www.prosoft-technology.com/prosoft/products/industrial_wireless/wireless_i_o/ilx34_aenwg
  11. Jeff, Thanks for the offer, but I can just purchase one. I have a budget to do so. Chris
  12. I have a need to purchase a few DeviceNET to Ethernet I/P gateways for my Allen Bradley PLCs. I've used anybus gateways, and they are rock solid. They cost about $800-$1100 per gateway and are rather large in size. I've did some searching but wasn't finding anything smaller and cheaper. How about you guys, have you used something that would be a DeviceNET Master on one end, then an Ethernet I/P slave for the second network? A gateway that would be a dinrail mount, small size? Let me know if you guys have any recommendations for me to look at, I'd appreciate it.
  13. I think I found the answer to my own questions. NO NO and see attached. LOL... Link to one of the pages in protected behind TechConnect: https://rockwellauto...54637/related/1 techconnect references: 5966 6848 54637 RecipeExample.zip db2.zip
  14. New moderator

I dunno, really. For me....We are a just a bunch of guys who share the common interest of sharing our knowledge and showing the upcoming PLC generation how to program and answer their questions. Sort of like Mentoring them. For Moderating, over time, we all get to know people and I think the key is "trust" people. Once we all feel comfortable with that and the person wants to help mod, send me a PM. Or I know someone in "real life"...LOL... Chris Elston
  15. I sure did. I called RTA Automation. I got a quote and everything. Right now I am just waiting on some project to clear the dust then I think I will buy on to check it out and see how it works. I already tested an anybus with profibus and ethernet i/p awhile back, but I like the size of the RTA gateways, they are tiny....
  16. First time PLC user

I am pretty sure I am well over the 500 mark.
  17. Slip Rings

I purchased one from this place: Keyo Electric co, LTD KYH25-1005 Contact this person Joykin Lee We did this for a summer project with my robotics team. It was for a ferris wheel. Pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/teamthrust1501/sets/72157626876388697/ Slip ring here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/teamthrust1501/5849318915/in/set-72157626876388697 Video here: They probably have one that meets your spec. 1-2 week delivery, custom made. KYH25-1005.pdf
  18. Had a block last week that came in that had the DB-50 pin connector on the I/O block soldered upside down. This caused the wiring to be: Pin#1 to Pin#50 on external device Pin#2 to Pin#49 on external device etc... This let the magic smoke out and damaged a high dollar servo controller. Watch these blocks if you purchase them. Phoenix of course is taking care of the issue, but double check.
  19. I don't know too much about this topic, so I thought I would see if anyone else did. I wanna do something crazy. I have an existing AC servo motor with a resolver feedback device. I have space and the means to connect an external encoder (verses a resolver) to a linear slide with said AC Servo motor. I'd like to use the motor portion of the AC Servo motor (pending it's compatility with AB Kinetix drive), and the external shaft encoder (instead of the resolver). It must be an encoder type for the AB Kinetix drive. So the resolver leads on the AC servo motor will be dead or unconnected, and the new external encoder will be on the same shaft as the AC servo motor. My AB motion expert, which I believe him, says it's critical to align the encoder to the rotors on the motor in order for my crazy idea to work. Can any one give me more of a background on this? I don't understand the theory behind that 100%. If I did, I think we have the means of aligning the external encoder to the AC motor if I understood why this is so critical. After this alignment, it seemed to be it was possible to do this. Any thoughts?
  20. I guess this is my same exact question. Does anyone know how this is done? As far as the other things. I don't plan on using the resolver, I was going to leave that unconnected because it's not compatible with a Kinetix 350. I was planning on only using the external encoder and the motor leads only. So in regards to that, I wondered the same, what is the procedure to align my external encoder to the motor? How is this done?
  21. B&R Automation Opinions Needed

I had a Sales Person today tell me that B&R PLC own 30% of the market in the USA and will over take Allen Bradley. Can anyone confirm this? Why haven't I seen very many in the field then?
  22. Data Collection

Ok...I just fell out of my chair rolling....
  23. I dunno what your machine looks like, but Cognex is great to inspect parts. I uploaded a machine I did with 5 cameras, all into a PLC, air blow off. http://forums.mrplc.com/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=353 Do you have a PLC? How are you intending to FIFO or keep track of the parts that are good and bad? I don't think it's wise to use the cognex as a machine controller, but if it needs to control local I/O it depends on what your machine looks like or how localized the decision is.
  24. You just don't hear much like this going on out there but take a look at this story: http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/20/water-pump-reportedly-destroyed-by-scada-hackers/ What do you think of this? I am sure they don't have the story right. The picture used in not a SCADA application....
  25. Oh my goodness guys...you will laugh, I promise... And this is Paul Harvey with the "REST OF THE STORY"..... http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/01/man-on-vacation-confused-for-a-russian-spy-almost-restarts-cold/
