How can I hook multiple RS-232 devices to a single ControlLogix system?? It does not look like AB has a seperate network card for RS-232. Thanks Bud

It depends on what you want the serial ports for. If you are looking to connect serially and go online with RSLogix 5000, then only the Channel 0 serial port does what you want. For ASCII, DF1, or Modbus connections, the most powerful and functional option is the MVI56 series of modules from Prosoft. For simpler ASCII applications, I use the 1734-232ASC modules for the POINT platform, or DeviceNet/ASCII gateways. There are a handful of ControlNet and EtherNet/IP interfaces to ASCII or DF1 from Prosoft and HMS Fieldbus.

With a Home made cable. Dev 1 - TX to RX on - Dev 2 - TX to RX on Dev 3 - TX to RX on Dev 1. Just remeber to set the addresses on each device.

Thanks All. I like the Point I/O method. Multiple ASCII devices (Bar Code Scanner, Communication to a CNC computer (Seimens) and communication to a few Keyence laser measurment sensors). Thanks again for tickling the thought provoking synapses. Bud

Thanks chakorules, nice article. Good use of rung comments. I realy like the "Stupid DeviceNet" comment, but I understand the frustration when tripping across the need for btye swap. Bud

eh....yeah...just ignore that part...it wasn't stupid after awhile...I make some retarded comments some times...notes to self. If anyone reads my normal everyday rung comments (management wise), I probablly would have lost my job or got escorted out of the plant I was working at...

This might be a bit off topic but I just did a Micrologic 1500 with a dual port ASCII card. In the channel configuration it had a swap bit function does the Device Net not have this feature?

Hi Bud, We have a product that will send ASCII data right into your tag in the PLC. Very simple. It's been really popular. You can take a look at it here: http://www.rtaautomation.com/ethernetip/435nba/ Rick
