RSLogix5 v5.00.01

14 posts in this topic

Ok guys, thanks for all the help last week, I got a new issue on a different project. I have the installation CD to install RSLogix5 v5.00.01. During the install it pops up an error saying the Windows NT service pack 5 is needed. I run XP Pro. I tried running the exe file with a different compatibility mode, but no dice. Any way to fix? Any advice would be appreciated.

Can remember what version supported XP, but I think it was a later version. If your license is active, try downloading the latest version from Rockwell.

According to the XP Compatability Matrix you need 5.20.10.

Ok, I'm sort of ignorant on PLC5s. Lets say I use 5.20.10, will the other guys still be able to use 5.00.01 on his NT machine to get into the PLC? I guess what I'm asking is if any upgrade is required on the hardware, or are the revsion numbers strickly for the development.

This is one of trickiest areas and I'll defer to a more experienced AB specialist. I believe although I have no reference document to support it. That the NT running 5.00.01 can get online and upload and modify code, but the 5.20.01 *.rsp will probably not be openable by the 5.00.01 Rslogix. I know that V4.xx.yy cannot open V5.xx.yy but 5.0 to 5.2 might be another matter.

New revisions of PLC-5 software are done to support new features (only a few times in the past 10 years) or to handle new operating systems and integration features. RSLogix 5 v6 and v7 were done to handle the very newest controllers (I think it's Series F Ethernet controllers that have the 100MB port) and to integrate better with security and networking software like RSAsset Security and RSNetworx for ControlNet. You shouldn't have any trouble using both RSLogix 5 5.00 and 5.20 on the same controller. The software doesn't do anything to the controller that prevents the older software from accessing it. I only anticipate shortcomings if you try to use a newer controller, or attempt to work on an offline project file from version 6 or 7. RSLogix 5 is part of the support contract set; any degree of support contract makes you eligible for download or shipment of update media for the newest versions.

Spoken like a true AB Service Rep Ken. {no serious insult intended ole friend} Not everyone in every industry is flush with money to be always updating their software.

I do understand the spirit of the comment, Bob, but there's been a rash of people on the forums trying to run version 5.x software on XP computers. Time marches onward; the 5.0 software is now 5+ years out of date. Most factories that run on PLC-5's are also big enough to pay their support contracts. I personally prefer to orient my business towards the customers who have money and will pay their bills, rather than towards those who lack capital, operating funds, and the willingness to pay for the services I provide. (and yes, I'm really grumpy today. Saltwater isn't supposed to freeze at these latitudes !)

Ok, I didnt mean to start a contraversy. I agree that the latest and greatest is best, but the Client I'm working for has several offshore sites all running old PLC5s with and have standardized on version 5.00.01. I'm doing a small upgrade for them at ONE site, we don't want to upgrade all of the platforms to a new version to integrate a small chunk of equipment at one. Its just not feasible, ergo I just needed some feedback on the best way to do this using my XP machine. Worst comes to worse I will just partition my laptop and load NT on it. I'll try version 5.20 first though and see what happens. Thanks for the advice.

Frozen in time, are they ? If all your customer's sites are using version 5.0 and Windows NT, you can use 5.20 and Windows XP without encountering any difficulties. A question that popped to mind; are these Solar Turbines generators with ControlNet 1.25 ?

Yeah I guess you could say that. Thanks for the info, I'm loading 5.20 now... and no there aren't any Solar Turbines on this particular site, possibly on other sites, but that's not in my scope right now. Something I should know? Edited by rlbarras
