Historical note: The SLC500 was introduced in 1991, about a year after Twisted Pair Ethernet (10Base-T) was introduced. The RJ-45 connector was generally used for multi-line telephone desk sets--Ethernet and DH485 were both hijacking a cheap but robust existing connector technology.
