  2. Yes OSR should do what you are looking for. See attached (excuse the crude drawing, the computer i have internet access on does not have A.B. software ) Regards BCS
  3. I have and application where I need to set up a way for factory personel to be able to change the clock (RTC) in a M.L. 1400 from a Panelview Plus. I have had an instuction that moves the value from RTC:0.HR to N7:0 and that has worked fine for years now. But now when i try to move N7:7 to RTC:0.HR it says invald data entry???? Can you only read from the RTC and not Write??? How do you write to the RTC to change time through logic? I have always just adjusted the time with my laptop at the start of each season, but I am planning on switching jobs soon and would like to set up a way for them to change the time from the HMI, as no one else on the ship is even remotly savey to this stuff. Thanks in advance for any feedback BCS
  4. CHANGING RTC HOUR FROM HMI

Thank you both for the feedback. Not trying to be lazy or anything but could you both elaborate a bit more? By sinc in factory talk (global connections) i will be able to change the hour in micrologix RTC from the HMI?? (Just recently started using factory talk, no training here, so figuring it out on my own, and with the help of MR.PLC of course) (great site) And by use CWP do you mean i just use a copy instruction instead of a Move statement in the logic and this will be recognized as a valid data entry??? Our bandwidth is really bad right now, (internet and phone via sat link) is taking me almost an hour to load this forum, log in and respond. Any addition info you can supply is much appriciated, i am going to go and poke around with what you have said so far and see what happens. Thanks again for all the help. BCS
  5. PV+1000 Ethernet Connection

Never mind, it dawned on me that all the times i have done this before i used a switch in between the laptop and the panelview. Just went down and tried that and it works fine. Guess you need a switch or ethernet cross over cable if not. As far as the text saying found I guess it is just inherent to ethernet in linx to say found when browsing even when the icons are X"ed out. (most of my stuff is running on DH+ and DH485 so I am used to seeing it say not found when not detectable in Linx.) All good for now but standby, I am sure there will be more questions to follow before this project is over. Best Regards, B.C.S.
  6. PV+1000 Ethernet Connection

Hello all, I just recived a Panelview Plus 1000 and logic module. Connected logic module and 24 vdc and powered up screen. Set IP Address and subnet mask and gatway, but still cannot connect to the panelview from my laptop. Have tried resetting panelview, cycling power on PV and restarting Linx but still nothing. Also the IP address and Subnet still show up on the configuration screen as 00.00.00.00 and not the values i have entered. When you go back to the network adapters screen the correct address and mask are still there but do not show up on the configuration screen. ( screen which has options to load or run application ) What am i doing wrong here? I have set up PV+ to Micrologix before and dont remember having this problem. Although it has been a long time and have probably forgoten more than I still know. Cant remember if you need to connect serial and load drivers for ethernet or if it is ethernet ready out of the box. I am still rifleing through everything i can find on the internet, but if anyone has some helpful advice it would be much appriciated. Also on a separate not: I have my laptop connected only to the panelview on my shop bench and not connected to the ships network, but in RSLINX where it is browsing it says in text that all of the nodes are found even though the icons all have RED X's through them. (whats up with that, I know it certainly cant have found any of the nodes on a network it is not connected to.) Thanks in advance for any and all responces. B.C.S.
  7. MAC VS PC LAPTOP

Hello all, I know that this subject has been beat to death, but i am looking to purchase a new laptop as soon as apple releases there updates next week. I have always been a PC but after purchasing the IPHONE and IPAD, I am seriously considering buying a MAC laptop. Would love to hear feed back of your opinion on using a Mac v/s PC for running Rockwell Software. Any problems running Rockwell on a partitioned Mac hard drive with Windows 7 installed? How about partioning v/s virtual machine with windows on an external drive? I am in no way experienced on this subject and would be greatful for any advice before I go and drop the $$$. Also I know you will shake your head at this one but I have been considering going with the AIR BOOK instead of the MAC BOOK PRO, I realize it has limitations as far as # of USB ports, and only has 13" screen, but I travel alot and its compact, lightweight size appeals to me. It has 512G solid state hard drive, 8G RAM, and 2.8 I7 processor so it seems somewhat compatable to the MAC BOOK PRO except for the graphics. ( please correct me if i am wrong about this ) I dont do alot of SCADA so screen size is not really an issue for me. Thanks in advance for your feed back and opinions. BCS
  8. MAC VS PC LAPTOP

I know what you mean there crossbow, one better the company i work for is run by europeans and the laptop they provided me to run the plc's on the ship is a Danish windows xp operating system. So when I have driver configuration errors and the like, I am often at a loss. ( thank goodness for Google translate ) Hopefully there are a few guys out there running Rockwell on macs so i can make up my mind which way to go. Thanks for the reply. BCS
  9. Is it fesable to parrallel an RS232 cable. For instance on the end that would connect to your laptop jump 5 - 2 & 3 to another 9 pin connector and plug it into a second laptop. If so could both laptops communicate with the same device connected to the other end of the cable? I want to use one laptop only to view and the other to view and write to the connected device. (FYI, the connected device will be a Woodward 723 governor/ loadsharing controler.) Thanks in advance for any replies/ BCS
  10. NEW LAPTOP ADVICE

Hello all and good Monday morning to you. I know the subject of what laptop and which operating system has appeared on this sight before but I am just about to pull the trigger on a new laptop purchase and wanted to see if I could get some opinions and advice/feedback before I spend the $$. Of couse I would like to have a Panasonic Tuff Book or a Dell XRF or even a ATG but they are out of my price range at the moment so I have decided to go with the Dell E6520. A couple of questions that I have are: WHICH OPERATING SYSTEM SHOULD I CHOOSE THAT WILL PERFORM BEST WITH A.B. / ROCKWELL SOFTWARE? Windows profesional w/ xp mode in 64 bit or 32 bit or go with the Ultimate w/ xp mode in 64 or 32 bit? If I choose the 64 bit with XP mode will I be able to run all the the A.B. / Rockwell software seamlessly? This laptop does not come with a serial port but they do advertise an E-LEGACY EXTENDER that is supposed to allow you to connect as serial. Any one familiar with this? I have never used windows 7 so I am not familiar with its use or "XP mode" I am assuming XP mode is just that: like you are using XP. Also I have never used any of the virtual machine software and I am hoping that Windows 7 with XP mode will do what I need as far as A.B. / Rockwell programs are concerned and I will not have to get a VM set up to use the A.B. software on this Windows 7 machine. I have heard different things from different people and really dont know what to think. If you read this post please chime in as I would like to hear you opinion / advice before I make my purchace in the next couple of days. Best Regards, BCS
  11. NEW LAPTOP ADVICE

So then Windows 7 with XP mode is still not realy XP when you are in XP mode. ( it is just some derivitive of Windows 7 ) IS THIS CORRECT???? or is XP mode actually like running XP and anything you could run on XP will work in XP mode????????????? Sorry if this question above seems odd, but I am not familliar with it and am curious before purchasing. Also with the Legacy extender, worth getting or just stick with the usb to serial cable????? thanks for the advice, keep it comming. BCS
  12. SIEMENS LOGO

Hello and Welcome, I use the Seimens Logo Quite a bit in panels for stand alone equipment. If you have an application that will require a few timers and relays I find the logo works well instead of using alot of individual components. The Logo Soft Software is very user frendly and easy to use once you get used to it, and it has a simulation mode so you can simulate your project before putting it into service. I know the software is up to at least version 6 which is the latest version that I have. I have some that have been in service for over 5 years and never had a problem with them. They are inexpensive so for a small job they fit the bill quite well. Allen Bradley also makes something comparable called PICO, but I am more familliar with Siemens Logo. Best Regards BCS
  13. MicroLogix DF1 connector

i have not used the ML 1000 but the cable should be the same as the rest of the ML family. Allen Bradley 1761-CBL-PM02, SER C PC to Micrologix cable. Best Regards BCS
  14. 1200 CONNECTION PROBLEMS

ok, played around with the comms and got it working. Driver says DF1-DH485 but now I do not need to use the 1747-UIC only USB to Serial with PC to Micrologix Cable, and Comm 0 light is not on or flashing. As always "Thanks For The Help" Best Regards, BCS
  15. Good moning all, I have a ML 1200 1762-L40BWAR Ser C Rev H that I am trying to connect to with out much luck. I am using RSLINX with a USB ot Serial converter and a 1761-CBL-PM02,SER C CABLE. Using a DF1 driver in linx when i try to configure this it goes right to test BCC and then to Test CRC and then just says " Unable to verify settings due to packet timeout! Check all cables and configuration and try again. I have attemted this many times. This logic controler was removed from and old network (DH485) that was dismantelled on one of our other ships. I have also tried to connect to this using using the 1747-UIC thinking that this may work since it was on the DH485 network before. But still no luck. When the logic controler is powered up: the power led is illuminated, the fault led blinks, and the comm 0 led blinks at a slower interval. I will keep poking around and reading on this but if anyone has any sugestions I would be all ears. Also I would like to thank all of you on this site for taking your valuable time to help those of us less experienced, you have helped me out a number of time in the past and I have gained a lot of useful knowlage from this site. BCS
  16. 1200 CONNECTION PROBLEMS

Hello Ken, Thanks for the info, you are a wealth of knowlage. I did what you said with the DCOMM button and did manage to link up to the 1200 and download my program. Then when I press the DCOMM button again I am assuming the comms are reverting back to DH485? As I loose connection in RSLINX. And the COMM 0 light goes back to blinking slowly. Is there a way to configure the comms to stay so that they can be accessed by the DF1 driver all the time? Or is this controler default DH485? As far as the storm goes we were lucky, Pollack season ended on the 1st of November and we headed south. we were almost back in seattle by the time that thing hit. We are now fishing Hake off the Oregon / California coast. We wont be back up in the Bering until mid January. Thanks BCS
  17. Hello All, I have a panelview 550 2711-K5A5L1 with RS232 port ( this unit is connected to a DH485 network ) how would I go about downloading/uploading the programs to and from this unit. ( I do not have a memory card ) I am trying to connect to this device on my bench and not connected to the DH485 network. Any advice you could give would be much appriciated. Also if you could referance where this material can be found on the rockwell web site. We have several different panel views onboard the ship and I can usually connect to most. Just replace a simillar pv550 last week ( one with RIO-rs232 ) and connected to this no problem with DF1 and strait cable. But I am certainly overlooking something on this one as I have had no luck connecting or finding any literature to help me along. Thanks in advance for the help. FYI ( its a beautiful day today in the Bearing Sea, almost like fishing in the Keys ( but not quite ))
  18. PV550 CONNECTION QUESTION

Thanks for the reply Micky, I still have a few questions though I do have a 1747-UIC but have only used this to get onto the network for our refrigeration compressors. in doing this I unplug one of the HMI's (PV300) on one of the refer compressors from the AIC and then use the 1747-UIC with a 1761-CBL-PM02 PC to micrologix cable to plug into the connector that the hmi came out of. At this point I am able to see all comprssors and HMI's on the DH485 network. ( except the one I have unplugged in order to connect my laptop of course ) My question now is how to upload / download to this HMI when it is not connected to the network and I have it in my shop on the bench. I just went down and tried to use the UIC with a straight through cable to the HMI ( I do not have a true serial port ) and I tried using the 1747 PIC drive. 1747 PIC driver only gives me choices of using com port 1- 4. My laptop defaulted to com port 6 and when I tried to change it to com port 2- 4 it showed them all in use. I have enclosed the list of choices I have for drivers. Could you kindly elaberate further on the proper procedure to accomplish loading this PV with it not connected to the network. Also I have never used the Memory cards we do not have one onboard and it seems I should order one to make life easier if we need to get something up and running in a hurry. I see that loading and downloading with the card seems simple doing it from the HMI, but what device or procedure is used to transfer the the program from a PC / Laptop to the memory card. I am assuming that there is some sort of card reader simillar to that for SD cards. Is this correct and if so do you have any prefferance for type of memory card and reader. Thanks again for the reply.
  19. Two button anti tie down

Hello Again Rob, I got a few miniutes and sat down and came up with this one. Its kind of long ( 7 rungs ) but no way they can use a brick against this one. ( unless they use it to smash the PLC ) Same senario as the last one I posted exept added a timer off the latches from the one shots. Both push start buttons will have to go falce to true within a designated amount of time in order to make a third latch that puts your output true. If both buttons are not pushed within a specified amount of time the oridginal two latches will unlatch stopping the timer. Its a little long for such a simple process but it will work if you dont think of something better. I have attached the RSS file to this post. (Brick Stopper ) Good luck, Charles BRICK STOPPER.RSS
  20. Two button anti tie down

Hello Rob, Try this one, it takes 3 rungs to make it happen but it works. Input #1Sart Button - ONS - (L)#1 Input #2 Start Button - ONS - (L)#2 (L)#1 - (L)#2 - (Output) Input #3 Stop Button - (U)#1 (U)#2 Inputs will need to go from false to true in order to initiate the one shots and latch junk outputs. Stop button will unlatch both junk outputs on rung branch. Granted the first initiation of the sequence they would still be able to use the brick on one button but after the first unlatch both inputs would need to go falce then true to achieve a true output. Will give it a little more thought on how to be able to get around the brick 100% I attached a RSS file using junk bits to test online. Have a good one. Charles TWO BUTTON START.RSS
  21. Another Newbee Question

Hello Ken, Thanks for the reply. Could you go into more detail on using the long Interger for me. How to set it up and use it. Unfortunatly the laptop that is provided to me on board the ship has Danish windows installed on it, and I only speak english. ( we have people from about 20 different countries onboard but none speak danish) so using the help menu or figuring out driver errors can be a hair pulling experience. I am enjoying working with the plc's and automation onboard but it is a learn as you go process. Ship is the Northern Jaeger Home port is Seattle Washington ( although we spend most of our time fishing the Bering Sea and offloading/resupplying from Duth Harbor ) I personally live in Florida. Thanks again for the reply and I hope you can give me more details about using Long Intergers, ( Love this site, its great to be able to get advice from people who are in the know ) Charles
  22. Connecting a ML1400 to a PV+600

Hello Ken, Thanks for the Quick reply The sensors I will be using are pressure transducers with a 4 - 20 ma output. One sensor per tank. ( The tanks are not a linear shape so there will be lots of scaling involved ) Will have an 8 point universal analog input expansion card on the 1400 ( Spectrum cat #1762sc-IF8u) I am certain that the tanks will have some sort of baffels in them as they are 35,000 gal each and I am sure that not controling the free surface for that much water oboard a ship in rough seas could lead to a scary senario. I will conferm this with the Chief Engiineer though. As far as the slosh factor goes I was planning to write the program as taking several measurements about 30 seconds apart then update the PV display with the average mesurement say every 5 miniutes. ( I have never done this before but I think it will be fun experimenting with it.) What do you think. Any sugestions for a smater soultion. Thanks for the Info, will try to set up the equipment now and let you know how it goes.
  23. Hello all, I have a new MicroLogix 1400 cat # 1766-L32BXB ser B rev A and a A.B. PanelView Plus 600 cat # 2711P-T6M20D ser D and a unmanaged switch ALLEN BRADLEY STATIX 2000 cat 1783-US05T. I have been asked to set this up for use as tank level indicator for 5 of our fresh water tanks onboard the ship. This will be my first time setting up a logic controler and panel view from start to finish. So far my experience has only been making changes to existing controlers and PV's that are already up and running. Was hoping some of you with experience in this would reply and get me headed in the right direction. My first hurdle will be to get the ethernet communication set up so I can see and download to each device via ethernet. Just pulling this stuff out of the box so I am going to start poking at it with a stick, look forward to gaining some knowlage from all replies.
  24. PanelView 600C Ethernet

Hello, Funny I just posted a similar problem. Is your PV a Standard or Panel View Plus? Is your panelview connected via Ethernet through a switch or through a comm cable to the RS232 port on the PV. If the PV is connected ethernet you should be able to go into Linx- communications- configure drivers- (select your driver ( AB_ETH-? A-B Ethernet )) - configure. Then try a few IP Addresses below and above the IP address of the ML1400 and see if you able to see the PV. If the PV is not connected via ethernet then try using a straight through cable ( 2-2, 3-3, 5-5 ) and connect using DF-1 driver via RS232 port. DISCLAMER!!!!!!!!! I am totaly new to Plc and Automation so please take this advise with a grain of salt. Just trying to be helpful until one of the props is able to take a stabe at it. ( nothing I have sugested will hurt anything for you to try though. If you are famillare with setting up a network for same senario you have there please reply to my post. Have a good one and see you around the site.
  25. Panelview 550 Questions

Hello, Total Newbee here, I am onboard a fishing trawler in the Bering Sea and am having trouble getting a panelview 550 that crashed and burned back up and running. I am pretty much self taught on what I know about Plc and Automation, the only training I have been able to recieve so far is when something on the ship stops working they tell me to go and fix it. ( trial by fire ) so please bare with me through my explanations. We have several differerant Plc systems onboard, the one the panelview in question is connected to is Allen Bradley PLC5 on a DH+ network. However even when this Panelview was functioning I was not able to see it on the DH+ nework that is routed to my shop. ( I could see everything else connected to the Plc : another panelview 1000, the Pc for the SCADA, and a couple of groups of remote I/O. only the panelview 550 in question was not seen, but it did operate and the techs in that area of the factory used it to change setting to related equipment. I have a replacement for the panelview its a PV 550 cat # 2711-B5A1 ser F rev H frn 3.40. the only backup of the panelview application that was being used is from back in 1999. Again you could not see this panel view on the network so no backups were being made of the file. ( all other relevant programs are curent on backups ) My problem is I cannot get this application ( panel builder ) loaded onto the panelview and I cannot get the panelview to communicate with the plc. I have done lots of reading on the subject and have tried endless times and methods to connect and load this with no results. The printer port (rs232) turned off and I am using a straight through cable. If possible could somone please walk me step by step through this. Thank you in advance and I look forward to any replys.
