  1. It's been a long time and I've forgotten how to do this. Is it a DDE Poke or Pull? Is it just a matter of setting up the topic and data in a cell is then transfered to the PAC using a MACRO?
  2. Does anyone know if RSView 32 works on a tablet PC with Tablet XP Pro OS?
  3. CompactLogix remote I/O

You can use the compactlogix processor with a gateway module from Prosoft Technology. Your I/O will then need to be SLC, PLC, ControlLogix or Flex I/O. I recommend Flex for cost reasons. The Prosoft 5601-RIO-DFCM A-B Remote I/O Adapter to DF1 Master/Slave connects to the serial port on the processor. You'll need to configure the port for DF1 communication.
  4. Solid copper wire

It's called 'Skin Effect' I learned about in Electronics training in the Corps. The skin effect is the tendency of an alternating electric current (AC) to distribute itself within a conductor so that the current density near the surface of the conductor is greater than that at its core. That is, the electric current tends to flow at the "skin" of the conductor.
  5. ROCKWELL RANT!

Gents, This is going nowhere and fast. From what I see, Rockwell Automation is not......not going to change their support model. In fact the cost went up a significant amount with the August price increase....at least for the low end contracts. Having stated that. If you are unhappy with Rockwell prices use somebody else. Just keep in mind.... the other manufacturers don't have the huge distributor network that Rockwell does. I can only speak for southern California but, we have 18 stocking locations with 8 PLC specialists, 7 Industrial Control Specialists, 5 Motion Specialists, 5 Software Specialists and 4 VFD Specialists.........who don't charge for their technical expertise. (that's in a 5 county area) In my opinion.....shut this thread down. It's turned into a personal attack by very small people.
  6. ROCKWELL RANT!

And gasoline was $1.15 6 years ago. I will say this yet one more time..........Do you give your services away for free? If so call me I have a lot of work for you.......
  7. ROCKWELL RANT!

I don't work for Rockwell but I do work for a Rockwell Distributor. The only reason I have my job is to help customers with PLC, Software and Service issues. My paycheck is derived from selling Rockwell products and services............Contrary to popular belief we don't make obscene profits........unlike the profits some of my OEM customers make. I used to work for an OEM.......we averaged 150% profit on our machines. You're not going to get any pity from me............
  8. ROCKWELL RANT!

Jimmy, Do you give your services away for free? I think not. There are over 160 degreed engineers in the Rockwell Automation Support Call Center. Each one has a cube the size of most CEO's offices loaded with every imagineable drive/Servo/PLC setup you can think of just so they can attempt to duplicate your configuration. Do you think they don't get paid or that the equipment didn't cost anything.......I think not. If you truly are a business person you'll get this concept. Companies like Rockwell get their asking price.......if they didn't they would go out of business. Take a look at their stock price.......I don't think they're going anywhere.
  9. ROCKWELL RANT!

Jimmy, You are obviously new to Allen Bradley Brand products. You're local distributor has a staff of product managers dedicated to helping customers with technical issues. Your local PLC or Automation Products Manager could have helped you. Now I'm not saying they won't eventually expect you to get a TechConnect contract but they can get you out of a jam in the short term. 10. GE Charges for 5.5 Upgrade while your in SUPPORT!?!?

I guess that explains the 70% market share Rockwell has. At least where i'm at.........Actually to be perfectly honest the playing field has become pretty flat with regard to PLC's in general. The diffirentiator anymore is how well you are supported by your distributor and the manufacturer.
  11. GE Charges for 5.5 Upgrade while your in SUPPORT!?!?

They can't compete against CLX. I thought about going to work for GE a few years back.....glad I stuck with Rockwell.........
  12. Factory Talk Activation

You are correct on the removable NIC cards such as a wireles USB card being used as a FactoryTalk activation device. As far as using a standard memory stick I'm only going by what the FACTORY has told me. You can hypothesize all day long and it really doesn't matter until you show that you can do it. Having written that.......I'm going to try it. Because it what you suggest is true. It will make my life easier. Honestly I think the reason for so much buzz about this is that you won't be able to make illegal copies of the Master disks anymore. I estimate that I lose 50-60% of my potential Rockwell Software sales to pirates.
  13. Factory Talk Activation

Hi all, I logged onto my Rockwell Software Extranet Account and did a little digging. Standard USB memory dongles WILL NOT work with the FactoryTalk Activiation. The Rockwell USB Dongle is special. The following is an exerpt from a Rockwell FAQ document: Q What hardware devices can be used as Host IDs? A Network card MAC addresses, hard drive serial numbers, and a special USB dongle (9509-USBDONG). A standard USB memory dongle can not be used. The special USB dongle contains only a unique serial number and has no user addressable memory. As I suspected, you have to buy their 'widget'
  14. Factory Talk Activation

That's correct. They have a utility to use the EVRSI/ EVMove activation scheme on a memory card. That feature (EVRSI/ EVMove) is going away with CPR 10.
  15. Factory Talk Activation

Come on guys.......Do you really think they would make it as easy as buying an inexpensive memory stick. I don't know for sure but I would be willing to bet they have put some kind of 'electronic twist' on their dongle so you can't use an off the shelf memory stick. It would be nice if they didn't.
  16. Factory Talk Activation

There are 2 Types of FactoryTalk activation types, Node Locked and Concurrent. With Node Locked the activation is tied to either the MAC ID of your NIC card or the serial number of your hard drive. Concurrent utilizes a server to hand out activations upon request. The activations can be transfered to a PC that will be disconnected from the network. These are timed activations. They will expire anywhere up to 90 days after being given out. The activation then reappears on the server. There are 4 methods to get your activation from Rockwell Automation: Internet, email, fax or you can call them. Rockwell is currently at CPR 7 (Coordinated Product Release). As of CPR 10 if you wish to receive that update your EVRSI Master disk will no longer work. You will need to use FactoryTalk Activation. At present not all software products support both Node Locked and Concurrent Activations. I attached a PDF file that lists the status of all Rockwell Software products and which activation method is supported. If you are like me and want to move activations between PC's you can use a USB Dongle based activation. Downside is you pay $100 for the dongle but to me it's worth it. Part number is 9509-USBDONG. 17. Rs Logix- Win98 Or Xp

RSWire was actually a 'Tweaked' version of Promis-e from ECTI in Wisconsin. They allowed Rockwell to brand label Promis-e. In fact the RSWire package was an older version of the current shipping Promise-e. The folks at ECTI will be able to help you http://www.ecti.com/ Hope this helps.
  18. Slc500

See attached .pdf file for SLC 500 Fixed stylr controller resets. You can also go to Allen Bradley's website Knowledgebase. http://domino.automation.rockwell.com/appl...9E?OpenDocument Technote: A14307 Reset_Factory_Default_SLC500.pdf
  19. Just a few comparisons between InTouch and RSView 32: •InTouch is based on Microsoft’s 1993 technology and must use wrappers and wizards to become compliant with the latest technologies . RSView32 is based on Microsoft’s latest & greatest technologies. •InTouch does not have a traditional client-server solution. In their solution, runtime projects must be located on all clients. •RSView32 can import tags directly from AB Logix databases eliminating the need to configure all I/O tags in the HMI. •InTouch has no object model. •InTouch uses a proprietary scripting language, only usable within the product. It’s relatively easy to learn, but also relatively limited in what you can accomplish with it. InTouch cannot extend applications beyond the boundaries of its proprietary scripting language like RSView32 can with VBA. •Wonderware's Terminal Server solution requires the use of ‘special’ runtimes (InTouch for Terminal Server). These ‘special’ runtimes cannot be used as regular runtimes, with or without I/O. •Because InTouch is not based on Microsoft Foundation Classes & Templates (MFC&T), it is not an OLE/ActiveX container. •InTouch lacks most development productivity tools included in RSView32 (Group Editing, Object Smart Path, Test Run, Wallpaper, etc.). InTouch has many expressions available to it, however RSView32 has VBA which is virtually limitless. You might consider RSView SE before you jump ship to Wonderware. •• •RSView SE has built-in, flexible redundancy , a fully distributed server, multi-client solution , direct referencing of AB PLCs (direct access to ControlLogix tags) , an open object model to interface with third party COM applications , a fully integrated VBA Programming Language , a more flexible Terminal Server solution , and is a true ActiveX and OLE container (InTouch must use wizards)
  20. LINK LAYER NOT ACTIVE

Not for the setup you just mentioned. RSLogix 500 with pull out a program from any SLC 500 regardless of the software used to program it (APS or A.I.500). You can even import your symbols and descriptions into RSLogix 500. RSLinx is a lot easier to use than Interchange. You can even take an APS or A.I. file on your HD and bring it into RSLogix 500.
  21. LINK LAYER IS NOT ACTIVE

Why are you using APS? It's been obsolete since like 1998. You will be much happier with RSLogix 500 and the latest version of Panelbuilder 32.
