If you have a SLC...this can be done with the 1746-HSTP1 module.  Keep in mind this module was revised recently and the new Rev. B module does not act like the rock-solid Rev. A model.

At a previous employer, we had built many, many machines with SLC-500 controllers, 1746-HSTP1 module for every stepper axis with pulses going to the stepper motors, and Anaheim transformers to step the voltage down.  Very rugged open-loop solution.  If you need precise motion control with feedback, then stepper is NOT the direction you want to go.

If you have a Control/CompactLogix platform...this can be done with an AMCI 3200-series Stepper Controller and is a cleaner solution, overall.
