SMC EX600 Ethernet/IP on SLC 5/05

3 posts in this topic

It has been about a millennia since I have worked with a SLC 5/05.

I have a SMC EX600 that I need to communicate with a SLC 5/05 over Ethernet/IP.  I cannot remember how to set this up.

I have the .eds

How do I set up the I/O addressing for the SMC manifold?

Do I need RSNetWorx for Ethernet/IP?

SLC EtherNet/IP is messaging only.  No "Class 1" I/O traffic.  You can message to class 4 instance N attribute 3, where "N" is an assembly number, to read or write the I/O buffer in a target device.  However, since this approach cannot deliver "Run vs. Idle" status, it depends on the device having an alternate way to set a packet timeout to cut outputs appropriately.

You have to map the data buffers in the SLC entirely by hand (deciphering the EDS yourself).

This probably is not possible with the EX600 and SLC-5/05.    The SLC (and the Ethernet-equipped MicroLogix 1100 and 1400) do not support I/O connections on EtherNet/IP like the ControlLogix/CompactLogix family controllers do.

If the EX600 has a mechanism to kludge a timeout or send explicit messages, you will also need an SLC-5/05 that is new enough to support Ethernet Explicit Messaging (EEM).

I'm wonder if I've got any EX600 stuff in the thrift shop shelves....
