New to step7

Being New to Step7, I would like to ask what is probably a dumb question. I have programming software step7 v5.3 and would like to get online with a s7-300 processor with the view to backup the running program. I also have a laptop with both a serial port (9pin) and a card slot for PCMCIA card. The s7-300 is connected to a HMI unit with a MPI/DP HMI adaptor (6ES7-972-OCA11-OXAO). My question is :- is it possible to use the HMI adaptor to get online? If not What do I require to get Online? Regards Steve

No you cannot get on-line via the HMI. You have 3 options, Ethernet (if your PLC has it), MPI/DP via a PCMCIA adaptor or MPI/DP via a USB adapter (if your laptop has a USB port). There maybe a serial adapter, unsurev if they are still made.
