A 'bus' is typically a communication channel which can communicate with more than one target device. The concept is taken from a power distribution bus with its heavy metal bars with several taps coming from it. Modbus, originally designed by Modicon, establishes a communication protocol with a controller which may have many of the following: Discrete and Analog Inputs, Discrete and Analog Outputs, Internal storage registers. 'Fieldbus' is a general term generally used for communication between controllers and remote discrete devices. Devicenet is a type of Fieldbus. This article in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fieldbus may be useful.
