VB6 application to CompactLogix

3 posts in this topic

Forgive me if this has already been covered. I have an existing VB6 application talking to a Galil motion controller via RS232. The proposed project is to replace the Galil with CompactLogix (common hardware issues for spares) to do point to point motion with data being collected during the motion. We would like to use Ethernet to connect the PC (VB6 HMI) instead of RS232. We would like to simply replace the communication drivers and transfer the same data via Ethernet. I have seen nothing to indicate that A-B has an ActiveX control for this like Galil does. It is my understanding we can do this via OPC. I have set up OPC from a camera to Excel before, but never to a PLC. Do I need to use an OPC server like Kepware or Matrikon or would RSLinx (not the free version) be better? How do I get the information from the OPC server into the VB application? Is there a beginners guide for using OPC with A-B PLCs? Thanks, Ian

Does anyone have any experience working with either of these solutions? http://www.abactivex.com/ http://www.blftech.com/abethdriver.htm

I've used an ActiveX control in VB6 with a Logix PLC several years back which worked well. Check out www.softwaretoolbox.com
