  1. OT: Safest way to travel?

Same with trains. And there have been a lot of civilian helicopters crashing in the mid-east war. Bob, are you saying that you believe if your number is up, it doesn't matter what you do, death will get you?
  2. They have all those knockouts so you can bring 2-3 conduits in from one side, then exit out the other side. It's for an abundance of options, not an abundance of connections. Connector... Not sure what you mean here... I'll assume it's the thing over the knockouts. The NEC specifies a percent fill. That has to do probably with each opening (it's the case with conduit at least) as well as the entire box. It's like your car. Just because there's room over your head doesn't mean you velcro another passenger to the ceiling.
  3. You guys ever have a sales guy come to your office and try to sell you stuff? At the end of the meeting, it's always the same thing: "We recommend adding 'this' to your specs." 'This' is something that they choose to put into their product that they feel is beneficial, but is rarely necessary. Yet, they want us to change the basis on which we operate, without even fully researching or understanding the negative impact this may have on other things (like cost, effeciency, etc.), because they will profit from it. This is what happens in politics. Except the lobbyists have 10x the money behind them, take the polies out for dinners, golf, etc, and convince them to put stuff into LAW, which demands everyone MUST follow what is stated in their 'spec.' If our clients don't like our specs, they can ask us to change them or go elsewhere. We're stuck with our laws, put into place by the ignorant, who were duped by greedy, and we the people pay the price. So now the question is, what have YOU done about it? Lobbyists are calling on your congressmen everyday. How often do you email or call them? The key is to stay ACTIVELY informed and involved. I say actively because most bills are passed in relatively low fanfare, with ridiculous attachments on them (example: a new hate crimes bill has been attached and will be passed with our troops' defense budget*). Some groups to join are: Campaign for Liberty FreedomWorks Each are run by former or current freedom-minded and common sense congressmen. *Hate crimes laws mean that minorities or LGBT's will have MORE protection under law, instead of equal as our constitution states. A loophole in the bill is, if you say 'I believe that being gay is wrong,' and a gay man states that this caused him emotional stress and made him sick, you can be convicted of a crime. Also, it protects people's 'choice' of gender. So if a man decides today he wants to be a woman, he can dress as one and go into the women's RR where your 5yo daughter is on the toilet. Crazy? The governor of Colorado already tried to pass this in his state. Do the research and see for yourself. Lightbulbs and digital TV are the least of our worries. Our young sons and daughters are at stake.
  4. MSG

^Yes. PC tags will make it easier. Oh, that was a while ago... Have you come back from fishing and gotten back to it yet?
  5. ^Sorry for the lack of info. It was just intended to be a general question. They've already switched out the Mlx's for CompactLx, and are getting new radios. This was just something a co-worker brought to my attention, so I figured I'd see if anyone else has experience with it.
  6. There is an undocumented problem with MLX 1100 and 1400 when used with a master telemetry unit radio. The radio dumps too much data into it that it freezes up and errors. This is not the case with the 1200 and 1500 because they use a separate ethernet card. Has anyone heard of this and come up with a solution while still using the MLX and radio?
  7. What is the distance from the Pump stations to the Scada Monitoring building?
  8. ^I don't believe they have that in Mlx. If I remember correctly, that bit is used within the PLC to monitor over range, but as far as the HMI goes, they use an over range forced value as I described before. That way, you only have one numerical display connected to one tag for that data, and don't need another tag reading the over range bit, which would make the HMI programming more complex.
  9. PLC-5 Retrofit

Just going from memory, haven't been on one in a year... I thought in the IXE cards, you set the TC type in RS 5000, under the card config. Your range will be 0-4095, but it will use that with the appropriate current or resistance scale for the temp range of the TC. Did you try communicating with the RSview32 from your laptop? Sure the port is ok? Are you using the same cable from plc to hmi as you are for plc to pc? ...Should you be using a crossover cable? I'm just guessing with the comms, from experience I have on other HMI's. Can't help much on RSview specifics without one if front of me.
  10. A lot of times people will set these up that way so you know you are getting an over-range. Typically in the program, under the alarming code, they will force the high value into the register if it goes over range. This value should be above the scaled max in the hmi, so that way it will display as **** on the screen (AB Panelviews use *) or something similar and the operator knows he has an error. You don't want to just show 0000 when you are over or under range because the operator may think something is wrong in the process rather than the instrumentation. So it seems to me that maybe he put in the max value instead of max value +1? Or maybe the process should never reach 5000, so that is an indication of an error? This is based on Clx, but I think it would be the same in Cmlx.
  11. It isn't my project... I don't have any details. All I know is it's a 2.4 MHz radio sending to a MLx 1100 or 1400.
  12. Has anyone used Elpro wireless IO? I'm looking into connecting the 905U-G to a PC, but I need software with a Modbus driver. Any ideas as to what software I need and how much it cost? Also, for those familiar with Elpro, could I just use ethernet? Clarification: I'm connecting it to a PC so that I can access the data from the internet.
  13. Small PLC with simple screen

Phoenix Contact just came out with a small controller also. It's called the Nanoline. Never used it, but with all it's gadgets, it comes in under $1000.
  14. I have a clx system where remote racks are connected via controlnet. I believe what i've seen/done on past projects was to install 1 CNB module per remore rack. So if i have a main rack and 2 remote racks, I would need 2 CNB's in the main rack, and 1 in each remote rack. I was told, however, that I only ever need 1 CNB module in a rack and that I wire all the other racks in series. Are both possible solutions, and if so, what are the benefits of each? Thanks.
  15. http://forums.mrplc.com/index.php?showtopi...7&hl=iamjon ^this is for a micrologix net-eni to enbt (clx, same as should compactlogix) It may not be exactly right, but the discussion may help you figure yours out.
  16. Ruler snafu.

Maybe we can add that to our next 'economic stimulus package.'
  17. ProfiBus Newbee

I did a system that had profibus on a controllogix. It was a pain. We used a Profi module that was made in canada. They sent us sample code that didn't work. It was difficult getting ahold of them in general for support. And I've heard they were the better company of the 2 that make the profi modules. I think it was Woodhead. Anyway, you have to reverse your data when it comes in. this might be what Ken was talking about with DP vs PA (I'm sure there is more to it). Like he hinted at, I would stay away from putting competing technologies togther. But if I were a more positive person I could put it this way: Woodhead did end up sending us code that worked (after 2 weeks). Once I got everything communicating, it was very convenient using the Fieldcare package to troubleshoot our equipment. But that is more cost and time to buy and learn that. we hired a fieldcare tech to come out to the site and work with us.
  18. I have a license on my pc, but want to move it to a laptop. Do I have to delete it from my PC first? It's for only 1 session at a time, so i can't have it on both, but i don't want to delete it from my pc till i know. Or does this need a reset? thanks. RSLogix5000 v17 RSLogix500 V8
  19. always on or off bit?

I guess my memory failed me... It doesn't verify.
  20. Thanks for the help. I finally got out on site and things went smoothly. Nothing was wired for io testing but we could pass dates and times between processors.
  21. PID Tuning Gurus

I figure i'll add my 2 cents even though the issue is resolved... I've seen a PID loop with a derivative of over 1000. What happened was a heat exchanger was oversized, so our water was flowing laminar instead of turbulant through each pipe in the HE. and out TT was a ways down stream. so like was stated above, we used the D to 'read the future.' I think of it like acceleration when watching it on a trend. because of how slow the system was and how long it was taking us to read it, we needed the hi D. i think it ended up being about 1500. Of course, if you design your system right, you wouldn't need this, but just sayin... :)
  22. always on or off bit?

AB now has a majority market in the world. They surpassed Siemens this past year. I wonder if it has something to do the with litigation Siemens went through. AB used to be primarily a Digital Logic company, with the likes of DeltaV taking the process end. AB has now begun a thrust into Process control (even though PLC's could do process before, they weren't sold as a 'process' system like DeltaV is [like renaming prunes to dried plums and sales go up]) which seems to have picked up some business also. Oh and the NOP I mentioned earlier is an output coil, not a contact. Funny thing is, the only way to get it is to manually type it in the rung or instruction. It isn't selectable from the instruction set and there is nothing about it in the help. At least that is for an ML1500.
  23. rsview 32

I believe this has something to do with either what directory you are installing to or folder names. if you're trying to put it in something like c\programs\rssoftware\rsview\rsview32, try shortening it to c\programs\rsview32. i've run into this before, but it's been about 2 years and i cant remember exactly how i fixed it or what the cause was. but try this and see if it works, and if not hopefully someone more knowledgeable responds.
  24. P&ID drawing

Now that I think about it, is it symbols in a box or diamond shaped symbols that are software controlled?
  25. P&ID drawing

could hs be hand switch and sw be software? that would be hand and auto...maybe the A in hoa is more like 'plc control' and you can do man or auto from the plc... typically everything in a box (all the symbols you asked about) are in software. so they might all be connected to the hmi. or try this page from acad: http://www.cadtoolsonline.com/pidinstr.htm root: http://www.cadtoolsonline.com/pid.htm
