OverTime Pay Questions for everyone

40 posts in this topic

I am looking for some general responses directed towards Controls / Automation / Robotic Engineers. Do you typically get paid overtime at your job? YES or NO If you get paid overtime, do you get paid for time over 40 hours or another time like overtime after 45 hours? If you get paid overtime, do you get a straight time hourly rate or do you get time and a half? How many hours do you typically put in for your company? And lastly, what area are you from? USA? Northern?

Over time starts at 48hours (or 55hrs if away from home 5+ days). Paid at time. Operators earn more than I do. Perhaps I should cut meat and pack milk powder /cheese instead.

NO overtime, typical work week is 45-50 hours. If we work for 4 or more hours on an off day (weekends, holidays etc...) we earn a "Comp" day, we get to take a day off with pay later. (Must be taken within 30 days) Sounds good on paper, but we are so under staffed, that when you want to take a "comp" day, you can't get the time off, so after 30 days you lose the "comp" day. A friend at a different company, same type of work gets straight time pay after 45 hours.

My title is maintenance specialist which is the highest paying hourly (non-management) job in our factory. I'm not an engineer, but jack of all maintenance trades...mostly I work on electrical PLC/servo/hmi programming debugging. I get overtime after 40 hours (1.5 times base hourly pay) I get 2.0 overtime for working the seventh day in a pay period. I get 3.0 overtime for anything over 8 hours on certain holidays. I am on call via pager 24 hours. If called in, I get a 2 hour minimum even if it's a 5 minute fix. Lately I work about 42 hours a week. Last year it was closer to 55. I am located in SW Oklahoma. No overtime. Straight salary. Typical work week 45-40 hours. Some weeks as little as 20. Some weeks well over 100. I sure am glad I like this line of work or I would need more money. Located in Kansas. Edited by HalBishop

Same here.. straight salary. No O/T, no "comp", usually no pat-on-the-back either :) Lately I've been working 40-45 hrs/week, in the form of five 8-9 hr. days. Last year it was more like six 9-10 hr. days. Located in Detroit. Position is Maintenance Supervisor in a resistance welding plant. Tier I automotuve supplier. Its a bit ironic how since business is WAY down and the company is struggling, things are better for us salaried workers because the pressure and long hours are off for the most part. Of course, we all know we're a bit closer to being given a permanent vacation because of the downturn, as well! As far as overtime, it is not the custom around here for salaried personnel to get it. Hourly workers, of course, are entitled to it by law. (aren't they?)

Yes overtime is payed for. Fixed salary for 38 hours, overtime untill 2 hours is 125%, additional hours 150% as well as weekends/holidays hours. When away from home a compensation for every night from home well enough to pay for dinner and to get through the day. On second hand... dinner is payed for as well.... When at the office I stick to 40 - 50 hours, when commissioning 50 - 70. I'm from the Netherlands, job goes everywhere. Edited by PdL

There are no contracts here or any company I've worked for. I am a degreed EE currently working for a tire manufacturer in South Carolina. Typical work week is 45-50 hours. On call 24 hrs/day. If called in on a machine emergency, will get OT at straight time. On shutdowns (where work is 16-20 hrs/day for 4 days) we will get paid at straight time (hourly techs at 3X = $90/hr - which is also 3X my pay). Must be at plant 1 weekend every 3 months - no pay. Even though I make it sound bad, it really isn't a bad deal (amazing how we lower our expectations the older we get). This is a much better deal than my last job (company took away all salaried vacation and layed off 10 out of 12 engineers - I was lucky that time). Was never paid anything extra and was ale to leave the plant 4 hours early on Christmas Eve. First job at Gov't facility. Work wasn't hard at all. Payed at ST for all hours over 40. Never worked weekends and raises were always 5-7%. Left there because I was bored and never challenged. Edited by brucechase

I heard Rockwell GTS pays overtime and give you a car and gas too. They took that away a few years ago in LA and some of the guys left. Maybe Mr. K. Roach can confirm.

Hello... Figured I would add my 2bits I work as a millwright in a production facility, you know jack of all trades. Where we are not trained in that field but expected to know it. I found this site helps me reference to some of the equipment we use here. So thanks in advance. We work 4 10s. We get paid by the hour. 40 hours a week, anything over that is overtime. After 12 hours within your shift you are paid double time. We get sick days (6) a year and holidays (2weeks). If your called into work its a min 4 hours. No complaints, just the crappy hours or operation, and lack of training. Rob

In response to the question I am an Automation Engineer in Northeast Indiana. I typically work anywhere from 50-70 hours per week, with overtime pay. The company that I work for pays overtime based on an 8 hour day, anything over that, for that day, goes into the overtime bin. The overtime pay is also time and a half. Now, I am an hourly employee, but I make way more money than I ever did when I was salaried. Saturdays are all overtime hours at time and a half. Sundays are all overtime hours at double time.

No OT, but I rarely go over 45 hours. Only during a big startup once a year will I go over and even then its usually less than 60 hrs. I used to get straight time OT at my old job, but that business ran 24/7, and the phone would ring at any time. Glad thats over now. That's funny, I already replied to this one a while ago. At least I said the same thing. Edited by GerryM
