Laptop to PLC comunication

I am trying to write a program to a FX3U PLC using my trusty red cable and FX works2 software but i get an error message <ES;0180840b> Unable to communicate with specified CPU or Station and I dont understand why! can anyone help?

Is the proper serial port selected?  Does the cable work on another PLC?  Are you using a USB-serial adapter?

The correct serial port is selected and i my laptop has a serial port

I have not checked if the lead works on another PLC but the serial port works on different makes of PLC seimens and Omron

I am beginning to suspect it may be that my software is to old

I doubt its old software.  Are you certain you have selected the correct model of CPU in the software?

The red cable pulls power from the PLC for the RS422 converter inside.  There have been issues where the converter died, or where the PLC is not putting out the 5v power.  That's why I asked about using it on another PLC.
