Stripped down HMI Software

6 posts in this topic

Currently, our SCADA setup uses Kepware, Wonderware, and Canary Labs data logger and historian. The data flow is as follows:

  1. PLCs --> Kepware (on PC near process)
  2. Kepware --> Canary Data Logger (on PC near process)
  3. Canary Data Logger --> Canary Historian (on Server)
  4. Canary Historian --> Canary Axiom Viewer Client (on engineer's PC)

We use Wonderware as an HMI on the Process PC to control the process. As many will know, this is very wasteful as Wonderware includes many other features and we are paying for all of them yet using only the HMI feature. Our goal is to cut Wonderware out of the equation (i am aware that Wonderware  could replace both Canary and Kepware with its data logger and OPC server features but this is the direction that was chosen so we are going with it).

My question is: Does anyone know of any simple and cheap (-er than Wonderware) PC-based HMI software that could replace Wonderware on the Process PC?

https://sourceforge.net/projects/advancedhmi/

AdvancedHMI is free. It is written in VB.net and runs on visual studio.

Turn Visual Studio into a powerful HMI/SCADA development package by simply dragging and dropping, no coding required. DF1, Ethernet/IP for Allen Bradley PLC controllers, and many more drivers. Free

Features

  • Allen Bradley DF1 RS232 Driver
  • Allen Bradley Ethernet/IP Driver for SLC,MicroLogix, PLC5, ControlLogix, and CompactLogix
  • Beckhof TwinCAT Driver, ModbusTCP and ModbusRTU drivers
  • Omron Drivers
  • Drivers are accessible via VB or C# code
  • Build an HMI in Visual Studio 2013-2017 Community (free) without writing any code
  • Works with Visual Studio Community Edition
  • Tested on Mono on Linux (except OPC and serial drivers)
  • Even Works on the Raspberry Pi
  • SCADA capable

Regards,
Garry

I'll say Ignition, you can buy just the Vision module and skip the rest since you have it covered. You could purchase unlimited/5 client/1 client licensing pending your client needs.

A third party module was just released called Chirp to link Ignition to Canary's data historian might be valuable however I'm not clear on the cost (if any) with that module.

Hi,

definitely worst checking is mySCADA, it is written in C++ so is really fast with small memory footprint. Uses HTML5 and SVG. Connects to almost any PLC but also to databases. Compared to Wonderware, the setup and usage is much simpler, but function wise, it is as rich as Wonderware. Also pricing is much better. You get a professional support and very fast setup and learning curve.
