Panel Power Question

4 posts in this topic

Hi All.. We would like to use 24vdc as our supply voltage in our panels instead of AC. Is there any articles that would support this argument anywhere. We feel it would be safer with 24vdc than the US traditional 120vac. Anyway..just curious. Thanks

I don't know of any specific articles, but 24VDC is definitely safer. I haven't taken a formal survey, but in new applications I see mostly 24VDC. I usually only run into 120VAC power on an HMI when I'm upgrading an older system, and even many of them had 24VDC instead.

Hi Jeremy... Thanks...if you do run across any info that supports the 24vdc power, please post. Arc flash, NFPA, NEC, UL, CSA, etc.

Look at NEC Art 725, and NFPA-72 Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 Remote-Control, signaling, and power limited circuits. As a rule of thumb, 24 VDC is commonly used for control and low voltage signaling, it is safer and a lot easier to work with.
