SLC500 5/03 with Ethernet

12 posts in this topic

Normally we have used the SLC500 5/05 which already has Ethernet capabilities. To reduce cost our customer has requested we use the 5/03 processor while remaining Ethernet capable. From what I understand we can add the 1747-AENTR Module to add the Ethernet to the system. Is this correct? Or is there a better way? Thank you in advance for your replies!!

No the 1747-AENTR is used to replace theSLC processor to let you use the SLC rack and IO in ControlLogix sysyems. Alan. Edited by alan_505

The only processor that is Ethernet capable is the 5/05?

You can use a 1761-NET-ENI or 1761-NET-ENIW to connect to your SLC5/03's serial port. See link. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&sqi=2&ved=0CDgQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fliterature.rockwellautomation.com%2Fidc%2Fgroups%2Fliterature%2Fdocuments%2Fum%2F1761-um006_-en-p.pdf&ei=LOgRVJXWI6iBiwKD4oHwBA&usg=AFQjCNEWUOdx-H8Oset5H4AF8Nsj6ae0MA&sig2=d8f739zQnezYeZnmZiCk1w&bvm=bv.75097201,d.cGE Edited by Mickey

Please don't take this the wrong way, but how much money are they actually saving? I imagine that a good portion of the savings will be put back into the 1761-NET-ENI cabling and R&D.

And here we see the voice of reason crying out into the void as usual I have that argument about once a week. There is almost no scenario where cutting corners on the hardware will save you money, but you just can't tell an accountant. Spend on the hardware, save on the software.

Hi brinkmannyou can use gateway PROSOFT (( AN-X2-AB-DHRIO )) as third party to convert DH+ to Ethernet, this link below will help you to get it. http://www.prosoft-technology.com/Products/Gateways/EtherNet-IP/EtherNet-IP-to-Allen-Bradley-Remote-I-O-or-DH-Gateway Thanks

Hi Sparky, you can find a reduced cost solution using a protocol converter as a gateway, between 1747-AENTR and Ethernet. Here are two companies that could be useful to seek for the indicate gateway. So you don't need to sacrifice budget for quality. http://www.gw1000gateways.com/ http://www.multigateways.com/ Edited by charlyrdgz

I have successfully added Ethernet capability to SLC 5/03's with the addition of RS232/Ethernet converters. The USR-TCP-24 is an open chassis 5 volt module but is well built, easy to mount and very reliable. One certainly can't complain about the price ($18 - $20) either. USR has other models available with various power requirements and enclosures. All handshaking protocols and data rates are programmable with free downloadable software. They also support virtual Serial port emulation. Anyway, not to sound the drums for eBay, here's a link or two to check out the device... http://www.ebay.com/itm/USR-TCP232-24-TCP-IP-to-RS232-RS485-Module-with-free-software-Serial-Ethernet-/231145715839 http://www.usr.so/Product/22.html

Most AB PLC's can talk a variety of protocols natively (eg, DH, DHII, DH+, DF1, ASCII, DH-485, RIO, Devicenet, ControlNet, Ethernet/IP, Ethernet etc..) and through the use of encompass partners talk a variety of other languages (e.g. Modbus, Profibus, Fieldbus, Hart, etc...) through simple plug-in modules. There are also many gateway boxes made by AB and other 3rd party manufactures that will interface or bridge these networks together. You may take a look into converter table at below link: http://www.icpdas-usa.com/advancedsearch.html?#protocolconvertertable?r=mohsen Good Luck :)
