115/230V 3ph Motor control from 480V MCC

2 posts in this topic

I am in the process of designing a MCC. The MCC has 10 nos 3ph 480V motors, and also 2 nos 115/230V motors of 1/2 HP and 1/3 HP ratings. Do we need to use a 3 phase step-down transformer for the small motors? Is there any work-around when a 4-wire input is available? Any help or suggestions enabling me to comply with NEMA/NFPA/UL codes are most welcome. Thanks for looking in and with best wishes, Raj S. Iyer

There is no magic solution to generating single phase 115/230V from a 3-phase 480V. Even with a 4-wire input, you don't have any voltages compatible with your 115V/230V motor. A step down transformer will let you generate 3-phase 208V. You should be able to run your 115V/230V motors from that. I think that a VFD should be able to take 3-phase 480V and generate single phase 115/230V, but I've never tried it.
