uploading program losing tag names

3 posts in this topic

Hello All, This is a post for a friend of mine. He is using RsLogix 5000. When uploads a file from the processor, it uploads the program, but doesn't upload the Tag Names, Rung comments etc. Its just the actual lines of logic. He also says he isn't getting the prompt for the uploading of Data Tables. Any ideas? Thanks for the help

Let's educate your friend a little shall we. He is getting Tag Names just not the descriptors or comments as their called. If he wants all the comments when he connects to a processor then he needs to choose Go Online rather than upload. Get him to give you step by step screenshots of what he's doing and we can probably suggest a better method.

Yes. That's what happens. When you do an "upload" from a processor without having a copy of the program, all you get is the raw code in the processor. You get tag names (there's no "address" like with other AB PLC's) but since the text comments in the code and on tags are stored in the program file and NOT in the PLC, this gets stripped away. Same thing happens in Logix 5 and 500 except that in those cases, since all you have is something like "N7:0", you don't even get a tag name to go by. If the code in the PLC has been changed relative to the FILE that exists, the only way to recover from this is to first open the file with comments and then go "online" with the processor, which causes it to upload the code in the PLC and attempt to match up comments with the code. This works well for tag comments but rung comments get mixed up if rungs are inserted or deleted (since the comment is stored as a comment and a rung number.
