  1. Before you laugh and write me off, do a quick google search and a little reading.Try here for example - https://www.single-pair-ethernet.com/en. Belden, Phoenix Contact, Rockwell, Hirschman, Fluke and others have developed a new Ethernet Standard for Industrial Automation with globally harmonized OPEN standards.  The tech uses a Single Pair conductor to carry TCP/IP POE Ethernet Traffic.  The first generation boasts 10MB/Sec at 1km (yes that's not a typo 1 kilometer) distance and 13W of power to the end use device.  Later second generation are specs are 1or2GB/sec and 3km with 50W Power. Imagine a photoswitch or proximity switch with on-board ethernet and full diagnostics.  Imagine reporting to work each morning and receiving a report that says the following 6 sensors are expected to fail in the next 48 hours.  Using such a report you would be able to plan their replacement and avoid unplanned downtime. NOW THE REASON FOR MY POST - Despite my diligent searching the technology appears to be 6-18 months from having market ready devices.  SO I'm opening this topic for anyone who comes across realistically usable hardware based on SBE and can post test results to do so here.  This tech can be the next quantum leap in Automation and I'm convinced the MRPLC User base can benefit.   2. Ok guys, this is more a networking question involving a Stratix 5700 managed switch and 5 machines. The five machines all have set IP addresses from the OEM that cannot be changed. The manufacturer has them set in the program to maintain that IP ,so if it sees the IP change it will change it back. With that being said all Five machines have the exact same IP configuration and I cannot change it without contacting the manufacturer and getting them to change it or sell me the program so i can change it. both options will costs entirely too much in my opinion. With that being said my only goal is to read tags from the PLC on each machine. Is there anyway to set each port on that Stratix switch where i can communicate with each  machine individually without causing them to have IP address conflicts with the other machines that have the same IP address. I hope I explained my question well enough. Thank you in advance for any help on this issue.

Hi All, On my control network I have two physically separate layers, one which connects the SCADA systems and HMIs to the PLCs, and one for the Ethernet I/P network that connects the PLC's to their respective devices. I've got my head around the theory of Routing, VLANs and switches (L2 & L3). I actually have L2+ switches on my network, and I want to set up VLANs to separate out the PLC's and their devices more, as well as keeping PC and Printer type devices away from the PLCs completely (With the exception of the two SCADA Servers to poll the PLCs). I need some help with redundancy. I should mention that the control network is contained behind a firewall which leads to the corporate WAN. IT take control for keeping us separated from the outside world. I want to implement VLANs and I'm going to need redundant paths if switches in the network fail. What level of involvement do I need to have to implement STP/MSTP? Can I just 'Enable' it on the switches and they sort it all out between themselves, or is it fairly involved? I don't need seamless transition if there were to be a failure. But network recovery within 30 seconds would be great, 2 - 3 minutes would be acceptable. 
  4. Hi guys, I'm in the middle of a little university project, I'm attempting to implement a control system purely based on artificial intelligence. A neural network will be used to map the characteristics of a power plant. A fuzzy logic controller will be used instead of the conventional PID and finally a genetic algorithm will be used to tune the controller while the system is online. This is all simulated of course. Each of those AI's will be developed in Matlab. Only problem with that is, is it outputs the code in C or C++ (From memory). I would have to convert this to structured text (Based on Pascal). So to circumvent this problem I thought I would just directly interface matlab to the PLC (Schneiders M340).  My idea being, all the calculations are done in matlab which are then sent back to the PLC. However this presents me with a new problem of how I would be able to interface matlab to the PLC. If anyone has experience with this sort of connectivity, any advice would be greatly appreciated.   5. Using its internal Ethernet ports, our 1769-L36ERM processor communicates with 15 other devices inside the same machine. Can a rack mounted Ethernet module be installed to allow communication to/from this processor and an external network containing a SCADA system and RSLogix 5000 workstations? We prefer not to add all 16 devices to our external network and our I/S department does not allow routing devices on the network that they did not install.
