We have added or should I say *FIXED* the RSS feeder to include the newest topics now from all forums.

If you have an RSS reader or docklet, subscribe to this URL:
http://forums.mrplc.com/index.php?act=rssout&id=10

If you just want to know the newest downloads, subscribe to this URL:
http://forums.mrplc.com/index.php?act=rssout&id=9

There are others, just scroll down to the bottom of any forum and click on the RSS button in the lower left.

Alot of people running XP are using this product:
http://www.stardock.com/products/desktopx/

Or something similar. Also the new windows vista will have docklets by default. There are docklets that install that become part of your desktop background. See some screen shots here:

Yeah I know them, didn't know they were going by that name, I know them as Windowblinds. I still think of these things as memory waste.. tried some once and it slowed my system so I got rid of it...

It's called RSS Popper, but I'm not too happy with it. It installed with a lot of news feeds by default which I removed, and the updates doesn't seem to be that frequent.
I like the idea though it's integrated in Outlook. There are more like this around so I will try some more I think.
TWControls
Let me know what you find. I am going to look for some too. The idea of having it in Outlook sounds nice to me too
TWControls
PDL - Have you tried THIS one?

I am right now.... thumbsupsmileyanim.gif
Looks definitely better as the other one I tried. Lots of configurable options, option to download HTML (works great!), systray notification.

You can try 30 days for free after this it is for free use for non-profit organisations and home use.
Well... I use my laptop at home as well dancered.gif

PDL - Are you getting alerts of replies or just new topics? I'm only getting new topics it looks like. Replies like this post will not show up

Exactly what I was going to ask you...
It seems the following setting also has no effect.

Also, I'm having trouble with updating the feeds. I wonder what the update conditions are, besides the time interval (set at 30 min) manual updates do not seem to work. Right know there are updates AND new topics to the feeds I have in Outlook, but "Check Feeds" from the Toolbar in Outlook as well as "Start Updating" from the systray icon doesn't seem to have any effect.

@Chakorules: Is it possible to add [Section] names in the feed topic names ? When subscribed to "All Topics" this would be nice to have an instant view on which section a topic belongs.
Also, when marking a post as read using my browser, does the RSS feed register this? Can't imagine that as there is no user connection with the RSS reader, but just wanted to ask.

I'll have a look at the settings some more and play around with them. To be continued...

P.S. TW; which version Outlook are you running ? (might make a difference !?)

I'm using 2003. I haven't played with the preferences too much. I will try to look at them this evening. Got to do a lot of work in the roof of our building and with temps expected to be 100F I'm going to try to get it all done before lunch. I'll play with the preferences this evening and get back. This morning it has no new ones but I don't think there are any new topics. It must have something to do with the replies
PdL
Just noticed that with Intravnews installed, Outlook 2003 takes up twice (!) as much memory as without...

Think I'll search around for another one no.gif

TWControls
Your right it does. Bye bye Intravnews
Chris Elston
Couple of things.

The All Topics RSS is only new topics, not all new posts...RSS is for websites normally, but becoming more and more desktop related.

And the RSS feed cache file on the server updates every 15 minutes. It's not REAL TIME like the old javascript way we had. Real Time is cool, but there is a price to be paid with real time. It generates MYSQL queries, which make the site run slower. Where as a "cache" generates a MYSQL query every 15 minutes, then a static page is read instead.

We could make it more frequent, but I didn't want to TX the server too badly yet. Watching cpu usage and trying to keep it running cool.
PdL
Thanks for clearing that up. I only use RSS to play around with so it has no priority for me, especially not when it could slow down the site.

TWControls
Same here. It is my first experience with RSS so no big deal. Was just curious about it.
Chris Elston
Don't forget that you can just use GOOGLE to add content. If you have a google account, click on the add content button. And you get something like this:

Duffanator
This RSS reader installs into Outlook and works pretty well for me. Doesn't seem to slow my computer down at all and is very configurable. Maybe you guys should check it out.
