Full Version: Communicating from SLC-5/03 to Modbus

We have a job in Russia that has a SLC-5/03.

Channel 1 is setup for DH-485 to a ProSoft modified Panel View Plus.

Channel 0 will be going to a modbus platform. The customer tried using an RS-232 cable but the DCS cannot get the information due to the distance. They want to convert to a RS-485. We will be getting a converter to change RS-232 to RS-485. Should the cabling between the SLC to the converter be a straight through pinout?

You get all the fun ones !

I am curious about what involvement Prosoft had in a PanelView Plus interface. The 2711P-RN6 module connects PanelView Plus terminals to DH485 networks without any other conversion.

How are you going to use Modbus on the serial port of the SLC-5/03 ?

SLC-5/0x controllers don't support Modbus protocol on the serial port, with the exception of a special version of the 5/03 that Prosoft built called the "RTU-5/03".

I believe that to be the 5/03 we have. The problem being Channel 0 does not work on RS-232 over the distance the customer has it run. Apparently an RS-485 works over longer distances.

In my short time with this company I have been exposed to more divergent technologies and different PLC systems than in the combination of the rest of my 24 years of doing this job. I guess if you don't grow and learn to handle the situations you stagnate.

I'm pretty happy that there are now forums that we can share experiences and get technical help from our peers and those that might be a few steps above what we know!

Thanks to all that have answered my questions since I've been here!

I take it you have an older SLC503 with the prosoft option. They don't make that anymore but it did work pretty good. I would buy the B&B 485LDRC. I have had better luck with those over the port powered versions. Also it comes with a DB9 so you would only need a serial cable to it. I think I have the manual for that processor laying around somewhere. Let me know if you nee it. I looked online once and couldnt' find it. Distributor gave me a copy.

Rs232 is limited to 500' or less. Usually les and with 485 they can go a distance 1500' or so.
