Hardware or Software side of it? Hardware. Electric: It depends on how much detail you want to data-log and how big your budget is. You can start by fitting Electric energy meters into your main incomming distribution board. Choose one with Modbus Ethernet TCP/IP. It makes extracting the data easier. From there, you can put Meters on each of your plant for more detail electric usage. Hardware. Gas: Fit in-line gas flow meters to measure your gas consumption. Most meters have pulse outputs which can be scaled depending on the volumn of gas your plant consumes. Again, if you budget allows, try getting a meter with Ethernet TCP output. Software: There are Software already sold out there for this purpose. I remember seeing one sold with their range of Metering devices. Can't remember the name but its a French manufacturer. If you want to write your own, I have used CITECT Scada in the past. Using the Process Analyst ActiveX, you can create your own custom data-logger very quickly. ie. 30min, 1 hour, 1 Week, 1 month, Yearly reports. The PC runs 24/7. All comms between the SCADA PC & Meters is via standard Ethernet connections.

You can get a commercial TED system including the software and the hardware for considerably less money than you can set up your own. We're talking between $800 and $1500US. You can't touch it for anywhere near that low with a piecemeal system.

I am using Citect on a NASA site in Australia. It is currently comunicating with 11 Omron PLCs with remote I/O and several Siemsns PLC as well.. There is a heap more remote I/O going in plus Shark and Eaton meters. The remote I/O off the PLCs will be used to turn off loads at certain hours and the like. The whole site energy usage is being monitored and trended. The Citect is also being utilised to monitor and control 8 diesel generators, a motor genset converting 2400VAC 50 Hz to 2400VAC 60Hz as well. Pretty big job. Citect is being utilsed to monitor and control the Olympic Dam mine site in Australia - over 1 million tags - remote PLCs dialling in - Citect dialling out to remote PLCs - the thing is huge! There are very few, if any, SCADA systems available that can work with this number of tags - many are limited to 64000.

Hi Wmezzat' Before you select any SCADA system, you need to consider some issues: What is the communication protocol in your control system. Does your SCADA support relevant drivers of that protocol? The number of I/O to be monitored( the number of tags in the SCADA system and the number of data tags which need to be logged)The size of the Control system ( how many PLCs (or other controllers ) should be connected and how large is your plant. how many different local control units )How many operators are supposed to perform operation with SCADA systemDo you like to have server-client scada system or single station can comply your requirementsHow important is the availability of the SCADA . If you loose your SCADA server, you may loose some dataDo you want to have web applications on your scada? what about some windows features in your scada like DDE or communicating with data bases like SQL or Access or the ability to communication with MS Excel etcIf you are looking for small data acquisition package, I suggest you to use EZ Data logger. it is free but It should be applied to small remote I/O system. With its user-friendly interface, you can quickly and easily build a data logger software without any programming skill. At below video you can see how easy is its configuration: http://www.icpdas-usa.com/trainingezdatalogger.php?r=mohsen As your inquiry is about energy management, I recommend you to watch below video as well: http://www.icpdas-usa.com/energymanagementtechnology.php?r=mohsen If you are looking for a complete SCADA system which has many features I recommend you to choose Indusoft: http://www.icpdas-usa.com/indusoft_scada_hmi_for_desktop_server.html?r=mohsen Good Luck :)
