Ethernet Digital I/o? Slc 5/05

Anyone here ever controlled some remotelly located digital I/O with your SLC 5/05 via ethernet only? I've looked at opto22 board with an ethernet connection to control some I/O. But I also wondered if AB had something standard like a FLEX I/O module that will talk on ethernet that I am missing. Any suggestions would be grateful. I just want to be able to control some I/O through I guess would be a TCP/IP message from the SLC 5/05 to my ethernet device to convert that to turn on some outputs or read some inputs back. My application requires this type of communication via spec, so it can not be changed to controlnet or devicenet, just to let you know. Thanks.

Chris, I am aware that AB are about to release an Ethernet adaptor for the 1734 Point I/O family. But I expect that an SLC5/05 which supports PCCC messaging only will not connect to the I/O. You may need a procesor that supports CIP messaging such as ControlLogix. PS Thinks.....where does EPIC fit into this? Can anyone remind me please?

The SLC-5/05's architecture and Ethernet daughterboard only has the horsepower to run the PCCC command set over TCP/IP. That doesn't include the I/O connection set that is part of the EtherNet/IP protocol that ControlLogix and FlexLogix controllers can use to control I/O on Ethernet. A-B makes three I/O platforms with EtherNet/IP adapters; 1756, 1794, and 1734. If you have to use an SLC-500, it's Ethernet port won't do the trick for you. There are several Prosoft modules that do various Ethernet protocols, but I'm not conversant with those and I expect they are mostly for explicit messaging and not I/O.

Ken, So if I use a FlexLogix controller I should be all set to control some I/O using Ethernet? I am not tied down to a SLC, I can be flexible and use any logix family controller. I am assuming I can find some more information on this topic in AB KB? Thanks everyone for the insight.

Is ethernet the only option? When tied down with resources I used to bail out using ADAM module on serial port. If you need distance greater than some 100' you can use a pair of converters RS232/422 back to back (B&B etc.). panic mode Edited by panic mode

Yes, the FlexLogix can scan EtherNet/IP I/O adapters with the new 1788-ENBT daughtercard for EtherNet/IP. Like the ControlNet card for the FlexLogix, it has fewer resources than the big ControlLogix does. Don't use Flexlogix if you're just looking to cut cost out of a ControlLogix, use it if you need a smaller, less powerful controller with the same connectivity and instruction set as the ControlLogix. The current V11 release of Logix 5000 supports Flex, Point, and 1756 I/O chassis on EtherNet/IP. The Version 12 beta I've seen has profiles for individual 1734 modules, a bunch of drives, and more adapters for upcoming I/O and controller products.

We have used Flex I/O with our product automationX and Profibus. All of the installations are running great. We have also used WAGO, Beckhoff and Opto I/O with the Ehternet spec. For smaller numbers of I/O we see this as an option. THe Profibus systems can be >6000 hard I/O per server so it's pretty intense. No PLC is required, just a PC network and you're in business. Do you have any suggestion using your product in conjunction with an A-B SLC 5/05, OPTO-22, and automationX? Something down the lines of: SLC 5/05 sends a digital signal using a digital output card to OPTO-22 snap in I/O module. OPTO-22 input snap in I/O receives signal, and transmits or (repeats) signal to another OPTO-22 output snap in I/O module across ethernet...etc... That's about the direction we are going, short of researching Control Logix as Ken Roach suggests above.

Will your system archietecture allow this sol'n? Read/write what you need to from the SLC 5/05 into a PC running aXConnect (e.g with DF1). Then from there go wherever you would like on Ethernet to OPTO, OPC, other systems, you name it. If you can work with aXConnect you will have installated a comm gateway that can handle major future throughput should it be required. aXConnect can execute on any existing suitable PC as well.
