Hi, What is it most important things on making a choice for selecting an encoder? (For instance Incremental/Absolute type, Rotary/Linear, Resolution, Max response frequency...) Thanks your help in advance.

other than the application I always check if the packaging is a pretty color........ bob

Standard wire colors. It's always a hassle when the replacement uses a different color code.

There's (*virtually) no such thing as too much resolution. Resolvers are superior in reliablility when exposed to high vibration and mechanical shock. They are also absolute and the decoder determines the resolution...8192 angle divisions per revolution are readily available. *Modern High Speed Counter Cards are very very quick but RTFM to find the frequency limit.
