Connecting to a OMRON PLC

21 posts in this topic

I can't seem to connect to a OMRON SYSMAC CJ1M CPU11 PLC. I'm fairly certain that the driver is installed, but when I connect the cable and look at device manager, I don't see it assigned a specific port. I do have a CX-Server Driver Mgt Tool as one of my choices in control panel folder. When I start it up and pick the driver it asks me if I want to uninstall the driver. So that is why I said I was fairly certain I had the correct driver installed. I am using an XP virtual machine to connect to this, it is running SP3, since the latest version of software 6.1 I'm using the CS1W-CIF31 and XM2S-09 cables and connecting to the peripheral port. I've tried using the auto connect feature in CX-Programmer to no avail, can anyone help?

My Friend, I assume you want to connect CJ1M-CPU11 with CX-Programmer. Use Cables : CS1W-CN226 + CS1W-CIF31 To connect PLC peripheral port to USB port in PC. Install attached USB drivers for CS1W-CIF31. If you are using Virtual Machine install drivers for both Host machine and virtual machine. Thank you for the drivers, but I already have those and the cable I am using is USB to peripheral. The virtual XP PC has the driver and it even shows the CX driver manager software in the control panel. I was told that under device manager, this cable should show up under ports section, but I do not see a separate comm port assigned to this cable and I think that this is the problem. Thanks for the reply.

Check Dip Switch 5. This should probably be in the ON position. In the ON position this will set the port to factory settings. If this switch is off, it uses the settings in the PLC setup. If you change the position of this switch, ,you will need to cycle power for the setting change to be registered. Hope this will help.

Yes, The cable need two drivers in order to work (OMRON USB Device and Serial Communication Port). If the drivers are missing for the com port you should be able to see it as unknown device in device manager with yellow color. So both drivers are included in the drivers folder and update the drivers for the unknown device by showing drivers folder. Regards, Chinthana

Dear Chinthana, I understand this is a very old thread and I am sorry to ask my question this way. Since my problem relates to the same issue. I am unable to communicate with CJ1M CPU13. I have installed the USB driver, but the comm port doesn't appear in the Device Manager. As it was mentioned by you in this post that comm port driver should be installed separately and it was said that " So both drivers are included in the drivers folder and update the drivers for the unknown device by showing drivers folder. " I cannot find this driver folder. I received a driver CD with the cable and I have installed the USB driver from the CD. Could you please send me a link to the driver. Thank you, Regards, Abdul

Some Omron PLC connections via USB show under Modems, not under serial ports.

CPM2A uses totally different cables than CJ1M.  CPM2A is connected via a serial port or the tool programming port.  It does not offer a USB port.

Ok... understand... but is there an easy way to connect? like building my own cable?

If isn't possible to build my own cable, I have to buy CQM1-CIF02? Or more stuff?

So... my CS1W-CIF31 and XM2S-09 are like trash? No use to CPM2A?

Thanks Crossbow!

You can certainly use the CS1W-CIF31 with this PLC. You just need to make sure that you have the driver installed.  Then it will show up as one of your communication ports.  You will need to make sure that you are choosing the proper port.  Then when you try to establish communications, there are lights on the CIF31 that should be blinking.  If the send light is blinking and the receive light is not, then it is likely that there is either a cable that is incorrect between the PLC and the CIF31 or the settings on the PC do not match the serial settings on the PLC.  If the send light does not even blink, then you have either chosen the incorrect communications port, or the driver is not installed / functioning properly.

Here is the cable that you will need to make (note that the PLC is labeled CJ1, but the 9 pin port on the CPM2A is the same):

I connected CS1W-CIF31 direct with CPM2A, the two LEDs blinked when I tried connection, and then failure again. Using the handmade cable + CIF31 I had the same result. :(

It is likely that your comms settings in CX-Programmer are not the same as the serial port on the PLC.

There should be a switch on the front of the CPM2A that makes both ports go to default comms settings when it is on.  Try turning that on and then try to go online again.

It is possible to make a cable.  See the drawing 3 posts up.

Use the newest version of CX-Programmer that you have.

They sell a cable for the peripheral port and I have never seen a diagram for it.

For Heaven's sake buy the correct cable for programming via the peripheral port. Don't even waste your time trying to make it.

P/N is CS1W-CN226. Just google it and there are many resources to purchase the cable at reasonable cost.

If your computer doesn't have a Serial Port then you will also need a USB to Serial converter.

This model has never failed me with CJ1M PLC's.
