Blank designation in profibus slaves in HW config caused data exchange fault. After an explanation

Yesterday's fun and games with S7-400. Issue seemed to be profibus DP related after 8 weighing scales all showed faults on the network. Could see each node on the network, the fault seemed to be with data exchange related. Program was reloaded (several dated backup) all same the faults. We came to the conclusion that it was GSD related and found that the difference between a backup found on an old laptop was the description in the DESIGNATION was the same and the model type just above. The backup we were currently used was blank, copied the description into the designation and downloaded the HW CONFIG and hey presto!! If anyone could explain why, it would be much appreciated.
