Panel view 550 Cant Connect

3 posts in this topic

To all, Hey guys I am a Controls Engineer trying to connect to a Panel view 550. I haven't worked with any of the Older Panel views before panel view plus. I am not sure how to connect to the Panel View to pull the program off and update it. I have a Panel View 550 Touch 2711-T5A2L1. It has one port that says DH485 and another port that I have only seen a couple of times. It is connected to a ML1500 via an AIC. So my question is what do I need to connect to this Panel view. I haven't been able to find much on the forums that pertains to this and pretty much nothing in the database on Rockwell either. But we all know how convoluted those forums are. Here's what I have. I am using a Windows 7 Laptop using a USB to serial adapter Staples Brand. Cheap I know but thats the company. Then I have both the 1761-CBL-PM02 Ser C cable and a 1747-CP3 cables. I was trying to connect to the AIC to get to the Panel View but could not. So do I have the wrong cables or am I trying to use the wrong drivers?? Any help would be great. Thanks.

The only device that will let you connect to that PanelView terminal over the network port is the 1747-UIC, which is a USB to DH485 protocol converter that supports DH485 protocol both over RS-232 and RS-485 wiring. The 1747-UIC User Manual has some good diagrams showing how these connections can be made. http://literature.rockwellautomation.com/idc/groups/literature/documents/in/1747-in063_-en-p.pdf A general purpose USB/RS232 converter will not work. My alternative recommendation would be to use the memory card to transfer applications on and off the terminal. A CF card formatted for FAT16 (must be under 2 GB) in a Type II PCMCIA carrier works well. The PanelView firmware has to be version 3.0 or newer to support an ordinary ATA-style (including CompactFlash) memory card. Edited by Ken Roach

Thanks, I really appreciate the information. I haven't ever had trouble like this before where I really had NO idea what I needed to do. Even with the notorious AB products where they spread the necessary information throughout multiple reference sources. This is a really old PV, I am trying to standardize my plant anyway so even though it will take a bit of extra work I think I may just replace the stupid thing with a PV+ 600. I know they don't make that 550 anymore but also it seems to be hard to find even old or used surplus of the thing. Thanks again for the help.
