DH485 PanelView Question

Can a DH485 PanelView 550 be connected directly to a Micrologix 1000 or 1200 by means of a single Cable. Or must it go through an AIC configuration. If the single Cable is an option, what would the Cable Number be? Also what is the Cable Number to download to this PanelView. Thanks for your help.

You can use the 1761-CBL-PM02 cable and made up one cable using DB9 and RJ45 connector. Pin assignment of both cable, you can get from Micrologix 1200 and panelview manual. Next step is from RSLogix500, change micrologix channel to DH-485. This will work. Another way is using 1747-PIC and 1761-CBL-PM02.

Guest_James, both of those suggestions are incorrect. Please be more complete if you post answers on the Forum. It would be best if the part number of the PanelView terminal were posted. This will tell us precisely if it has DH-485 protocol with DH-485 electrical interface, or with RS-232 electrical interface. If your PanelView literally has a DH-485 network plug (the modular RJ-45 style), you MUST use a 1761-NET-AIC isolator to connect it to a MicroLogix 1000, 1200, or 1500 controller (the MicroLogix 1100 will have a built-in DH485 port option). In such an installation, I prefer to use a 1761-CBL-AS03 or -AS09 cable to connect the 1761-NET-AIC to the PanelView, and a 1761-CBL-AM00 to connect to the MicroLogix. This arrangement is shown in the 1761-NET-AIC User Manual on page 3-4 If your PanelView is a "DH485 protocol on RS-232", then it is electrically compatible with the RS-232 serial port on a MicroLogix 1000, 1200, or 1500. I usually use whatever cable I'm using to program the MicroLogix (such as the common 1761-CBL-PM02) and add a null-modem adapter to connect to the PanelView terminal. PanelView terminals are unusual because they have a "DCE" type serial port instead of a "DTE" type serial port like most controllers and PC's. To download to an "DH485 over RS-232" type PanelView, you use a straight serial cable instead of a "null modem" type. Again, the precise part number of the PanelView terminal will help clarify this discussion. Also, all of this information is laid out clearly in the User Manuals for the PanelView terminal.

I have access to a PanelView 550 Cat. # 2711-B5A2 PanelBuilder32 tells me it has a Physical Port RS485 and a DH485 Protocol. I had never even heard of a Micrologix 1100. Interesting. But the easiest Micro 1000 solution will be easier for me right now. I just need a test setup to experiment with Panelview programming. Not at all logical like a PLC.

That's unambiguous; the terminal "2" in the PanelView part number indicates that is has a DH485 network port only. You need a 1761-CBL-AS03 (3 meters) or -AS09 (9 meters) to connect from the 1761-NET-AIC to the PanelView. That cable can be constructed if you need a shorter length; the pinout is in the RA Knowledgebase. You can connect from either RS232 port of the 1761-NET-AIC to the MicroLogix. I typically use the same cables that I use for MicroLogix programming to connect my MicroLogix and my PC to the 1761-NET-AIC. That cable is part number 1761-CBL-PM02. You might also choose to use a 1761-CBL-AM00 cable to connect the MicroLogix to the 1761-NET-AIC. This gives you the additional benefit of supplying the Net-AIC with power via that cable. Again, there are pretty pictures of these sort of simple DH485 networks in the User Manual and the Installation Guide for the 1761-NET-AIC. My copy is 9 years old, but the cabling hasn't changed.

I'm back again with more questions. This is the Hardware / Cables / Software I am using. RSLinx Version 2.41.00 ONE 2711-B5A2 Allen-Bradley PanelView 550 Series G, REV A, FRN 4.20 ONE 1761-L16AWA Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1000 Series A, FRN 2.0 ONE 1761-NET-AIC Allen-Bradley Advanced Interface Converter Series B ONE 24VDC Regulated Power Supply (External Power for AIC+) ONE 1761-CBL-AS03 Allen-Bradley AIC To Comms CABLE Series A ONE 1761-CBL-PM02 Allen-Bradley PC To Micrologix Comms CABLE Series C ONE 1761-CBL-PM02 Generic PC To Micrologix Comms CABLE The 1761-CBL-AS03 connects the AIC and the PanelView. The Generic 1761-CBL-PM02 connects the AIC and the Micrologix. The Allen-Bradley 1761-CBL-PM02 connects the AIC and a Windows 2000 Laptop. With RSWho I can only see (and download to) the PanelView if I use the 1747-PIC/AIC+ Driver (AB_PIC-1 DH485 Sta:0 COM1: RUNNING) With RSWho I can only see (and download to) the Micrologix if I use the RS-232 DF1 devices Driver (AB_DF1-1 DH485 Sta:0 COM1: RUNNING) Of course these Drivers can NOT be run successfully at the same time. One or the other. I thought the Micrologix was supposed to be PIC/AIC Driver Compatible, but I can't get it to work that way yet. I any case communicating with only one device at a time is no help to me at all. What the heck am I doing wrong? Hope I provided enough detail. I

The very early MicroLogix 1000 controllers only supported DF1 Full Duplex; the DH-485 and DF1 Half Duplex capabilities were added later. You say the MicroLogix is firmware 2.0.... that *ought* to support DH485, but it's an "autoswitching" feature and doesn't work well point-to-point. Usually you have to hook the MicroLogix 1000 up to a DH485 network with activity already present in order to have it switch.l Try adding the MicroLogix 1000 to a network that already has DH485 traffic on it and see if it comes up on a DH485 browse.

Thnks Eddie for your "Good News", "Bad News" answer. And thanks to Ken Roach by the way, also. The good news is I have not totally lost my mind. I was sure I had programmed Micro 1000's using the 1747-PIC/AIC+ Driver in the past. Using newer equipment, of course. I never had a clue about this problem. The bad news is I don't have immediate access to the a network carrying the data you indicated. Using a Micro 1000, how new an FRN must I have to support this Driver without the need for "autoswitching".

O.K. I checked some Allen-Bradley literature. It seems I must be concerned with the SERIES of a processor rather than the FRN. A newer Series E Micro 1000 would be more communications capable than my Series A Micro 1000. But a Micro 1200 seemed to be even a better choice than a Micro 1000. So I got a Micro 1200 1762-L24AWA Series C, Rev B, FRN 5. It won't work either !!!!!! If the Micro 1200 communication cable is DISCONNECTED, RSWho can see the Panelview when running the 1747-PIC/AIC+ Driver (AB_PIC-1 DH485). But just reconnect the comunication cable to the Micro 1200 and RSWho puts a big red X over the Panelview icon. And I still can't see the Micro 1200 with that driver even though it causes the Micro 1200 COMM light to flash (rapidly). Can a lowly PLC programmer (trying to unravel the mysteries of Panelview programming) make this work? I am not a PLC network engineer. I don't have a staff of engineers to solve this for me. I have access to what I had indicated above. I'm about ready to roast marshmallows over this darn Panelview.

Both your Micrologix will work fine if configured correctly. Access the PLC using RSlogix, go to channel configuration, then select channel 0 tab. In dropdown box select DH485. Power off the PLC, connect it to your AIC and it will now appear on the DH485 network.

When you want to communicate with a device that supports DH485 protocol. Your PC will have to have a real serial port. What are you trying to communicate with? Complete catalog numbers please. Not sure if that is the answer you are looking for.
