1784-U2DHP to panelview comm issue

10 posts in this topic

I have a SLC 5/04 that communicates with a allen bradley panelview 600 through RS232. Since we started using this new usb cable I am no longer able to see the panelview in my list. Had no issues when we were using the older PCMK communications card. Anyone have any idea's as to why I can not see the PV in rslinx now? Thanks in advance to any and all who reply.

What type of RSLinx driver are you using to interface with the system? Older revisions of Linx required a DF1 (Serial RS232- 1770-KF2/1785-KE) driver which would connect to the SLC's Serial port hence disabling the PanelView RS232 communications connection. The newer RSLinx revisions, 2.53 and higher, provide the user with a "1784-U2DHP for DH+ Devices" driver which would be configured as a DH+ network node (just like the old PCMK adapters) thus enabling the user to monitor any existing CPU Serial connections. Currently I have version 2.54 which is supposed to hAve the drivers built in as well. I can connect to everything else in the factory except these panelviews. I have tries the rs232 dfi driver which converts to dh+ after i set it up but still does not see the rs232 connection the the processor.

If you are running RSLinx Rev.2.54 you will have to configure the 1784-U2DHP driver in order to "monitor" the CPU RS232 connection. ANY DF-1 configured driver WILL NOT be able to "see" the PanelView RS232 connection SINCE THE DRIVER IS USING THE SAME UNIQUE CPU PORT to interface with the SLC processor! The installation and configuration of the USB to DH+ 1784-U2DHP adapter could be found at: http://literature.rockwellautomation.com/idc/groups/literature/documents/in/1784-in045_-en-p.pdf However, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CONNECT TO THE RS232 PanelView TERMINAL USING ANY DH+ DRIVERS! You will have to establish a Serial RS232 connection DIRECTLY BETWEEN THE PC AND THE HMI TERMINAL in order do deploy any HMI application software. Edited by dmargineau

This is rather disappointing considering with the older PCMK card i could communicate with the HMI through the processor. One would think with a newer product you would gain features not lose them. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I think there are some mis-understandings here. I believe you are trying the "drill down" from DH+ to the DF1 serial port of the SLC-5/04 so that you can "pass through" it to communicate with the PanelView 600. Is this correct ? It's possible that the 1784-U2DHP supports only Local DH+ messaging, or there is something else different in the configuration today compared to when you used the 1784-PCMK. If you are really comparing the PCMK/U2DHP side by side that will provide important consistency information. I did find a Knowledgebase document suggesting that the DF1 Full Duplex driver when used with the 1784-U2DHP device supports only DH+ local messaging. I do not know if the modern device-specifc 1784-U2DHP driver has the same limitation. Edited by Ken Roach

You are correct in the fact im trying to drill through the slc via DH+ to the DF1 Serial port. I will look for a alternative method to access the HMI via rs232. I have yet to find a usb to comm cable that does not consistantly drop communications during an upload or a download.

We use the Allen Bradley 9300-USBS adapter. If memory serves they were $25 USD or something cheap liket hat.
