Devicenet or Profibus

2 posts in this topic

Hi I’m considering using a bus system for a new application – added to my PLC5-system. I have two position transducers (from MTS) and two speed-variable motors. I can interface to these units through Devicenet or Profibus. The Devicenet adapter I can place wherever I want in the chassis, and the Profibus adapter I must place next to the PLC. I prefer the Devicenet solution, because I can put the adapter in any position – but I think both solutions can do my job. Perhaps the Profibus solution is faster because it interfaces directly into the PLC addresses – and I like that too. But coming from no bus system – what should I choose… is Profibus the overall winner in the future? Hoping to get some useful ideas and inputs from you! Christian

My personal preference is DNet. But I have not used either with a PLC-5. Profibus is fast but only if your hardware can handle it. Maybe more support for DNet with AB hardware.
