Wan Between Plc's

5 posts in this topic

hi thr all PLC experts recently i have been asked to provide a solution to the following desired system we have about 100 micrologix PLC's spread all over a city doing some individual processes(basically all are used for same application, say X) now my job is to gather data from all these PLC's to one central location on SCADA or some other interface daily. we can assume that the city has a radius of about 50-60 kms. i would like to ask you ppl wht will be the best scheme possible to make this thing work. i have one question in mind whether to go wireless or rely upon Public wired telephone network. also i would like to point out tht the data from these micrologix plc's is not much critical and is needed just for about 3-4 times a day. just for analysis purpose.so it should be a cost effective solution, without burining hole in my clients pocket i would also like to know about the details of these scheme, ie:-the part /catalog numbers for the devices required in this scheme whether AB has all the things required to acheive this purpose or will i need some third party devices to accomplish this. it will be very helpful to me if you guys provide me with your valuable comments and suggestions i am waiting for them Regards NileshSURYA AB PLC Programmer hi thr i would like to add that the micrologix PLC's can be ML1200 or the newly introduced ML1100 thanx NileshSURYA AB PLC PROGRAMMER

I would look at an SMS system using the GSM phone network, the easiest way I know of is to use a unitronics PLC as this has built-in SMS capability, however you can with a bit of work with the AB to get it to send SMS messages. I built a number of machines all talking back to a central PC by sending an SMS every hour that gave various machine data in one SMS that was then displayed on the PC similar to how a SCADA system would work. Unitronics do a front end for the received SMS messages that is a basic SCADA system. http://www.unitronics.com/

Yeah, I'm sure your boss wouldn't take too kindly to you suggesting that he have you rip out the micrologix's and replace them with some other PLC just for the sake of comms :) This is not my area of expertise AT ALL, but what do you think about this: http://www.miille.com/din366-101.pdf If you give them a call, I'm sure they could let you know what all you'd need to connect your micros over a radio modem link.

nileshsurya: Maybe you can try using some ProLinx products. They have DF1 to RF or DH-485 to RF converters, and RF to -any protocol- converters, too. Check it from their homepage: http://www.prolinxgateways.com/ or more exactly: http://www.radiolinx.com/ Regards!
