Program malfunctions between sensors and PLC

I have designed and built an auto docking saw that has optimising defect docking functions and is operated via a touch screen control panel. I am having numerous problems with this machine not performing the operations reliably. My programmers have checked the program and report that there should be no problems. Maybe the sensors (luminescence and light beam) are causing problems? Any clues?
