omron Omron CP1L error ""Failed to change the operating mode the operation mode may be still changing in the PLC"

11 posts in this topic

So a little new to PLC's especially Omron PLC. I have this machine from Japan that uses Omron CP1L which needed some modification. I made the modifications and uploaded it on to the PLC. When I try to put it in "run" mode it gives me the "Failed to change the operating mode the operation mode may be still changing in the PLC" error. After that the machine does not move even with the orginial plc logic. At first I thought it was my logic and so I double checked and did it again. Same thing occured. Has anyone experienced anything like this? How can I fix the PLC?

Thanks

What happens if you try to put it in Monitor Mode?

I don't know the answer but it may be helpful to let the forum know the full part number of the CP1L. Also, do you have and expansion modules or option modules attached?

How are you connected? (Ethernet, Serial, USB)

When I put it in monitor mode it give me the same error. But when I am "Work Online" with the plc, I can see the inputs light up when I press the input buttons etc.

The full part number to the plc is : Omron CP1L-M40DR-A

I am not using any expansion modules or any other modules, just what it comes with already.

I am connected to my laptop via USB. I thing I have noticed is sometimes my computer crashes at times when I pull the usb cord from the PLC side or computer side. It also crashes when I turn the plc switch from on to off and back on.

thank you, any help would be appreciated.

Sounds to me that the program is not being transferred to the PLC and you may well have a bad USB cable. Use another USB cable.

After transferring program "To PLC" use the "Compare with PLC" to confirm program has downloaded.

Yes sir that was my speculation at first, so I bought a brand new cable, switched the cable I was using and tried again. Still ended up getting the same issue.

After transferring program "To PLC"  did you use "Compare with PLC" feature to make sure that both codes matched exactly and it was "Compare Sucessful" after that I into "Operation Mode" -> "Monitor Mode" = "Failed to change operation mode. The operation mode may be still changing in the PLC"

Went to "Run Mode" = "Failed to change operation mode. The operation mode may be still changing in the PLC"

I tried to get in touch with the Omron Technical Support but I have heard back from them ever since and it has been 3 days.

Dpatel43,

How did you try to contact tech support?

Email would be ia.techsupport@omron.com.  This may take up to a week to get a response, usually about 2 days.

Phone would be 1-800-556-6766.  You may be on hold for a while, but should be able to talk to someone.  You may need to be escalated to Level 2 support.

Hope this will help.

A sales specialist reached out to in regards to the software some time ago, probably few months ago. So I basically sent her an email explaining and if I can get Technical suppor help on the matter. Have not heard back from her yet. I will send technical support an email as well as try to give them a call. Thanks Gtsuport

Update: The problem was fixed by just unplugging the power and let it sit there for a few hours. No idea how but it works.

From my experience, the mentioned error will appear if there is another session of the CX-Programmer running, with transfer-related dialog box active. Even if the transfer (upload or download) is already finished, and the dialog box is only waiting for OK.

Or, when the CX server stops working. In such case, the CX-Programmer restart helps.
