plc traing classes for allen bradely

26 posts in this topic

I am new to the forum and would like to know where I could find a few good choices of training classes to take .I'm new to plc but not to electrical work as I have 11 years experience in the field. I have had some time with micro logix 1400 and control logix but not enough to be proficient at either of them. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated .

I'm a big fan of learning by doing. You say you have had some time with the Micrologix 1400 but do you have one you can play with at home? Do you have the software? Also what are you looking to do with it? Maintain existing systems or build new systems?

I do have the software but I do not have a system that I can mess around with, the one I currently have been using is at work on one of our lines. Right now I am just wanting to be able to maintain and trouble shoot our current system and eventually add or delete component's as needed.

I would start off by getting you a PLC to play with. You can find one on eBay or we have several PLC trainers to choose from http://www.theautomationstore.com/plc-trainers/ Also you could setup your PC with RsLogix and RsEmulate to play with. Here is a tutorial on doing that And finally is your company interested in investing in some training? If so I would recommend Ron Beauforts Boot Camp. But only if your company is interested. Otherwise I would play with it a on your own first and see if it is really a fit for you. http://ronbeaufort.com/

The Rockwell Automaton Classes are hands and and very good, but about $1500 a day, held in many locations across the US The advantage is you get away and get training. Yes you could purchase a ML1400 but would your company allow you to sit and learn?

Something worth looking at is LogixPro from The Learning Pit. It's an RSLogix 500 simulator with some cool simulations to play with. I like that the simulations are interactive, because it forces you to think harder. When you are just playing with a PLC in your basement, you might have a few buttons and turn on some lights or a small motor or something, but it's not exactly anything that you can create complex programs with. With LogixPro you get to program simulations of batch cooking processes, bottle filling assembly lines, traffic intersections, elevators and more. Best $35 you'll ever spend. http://www.thelearningpit.com/lp/logixpro.html Make sure to read and follow the student exercises! http://www.thelearningpit.com/lp/doc/index.html Edited by MrAutomation

I have been to one Rockwell class didn't feel like I learned a lot it seemed to be mainly power point presentation's and not enough real life problems. I will look into the learning pit exercise's thank you.

That is a fairly common complaint about the RA classes. Probably one of the most important things you need to identify is your learning style. That may define best what would work for you.

I'm defiantly more hands on than anything ,10 min into books or power point and my mind is wondering.

If you get a Micrologix I would recommend the 1100. It has the bells and whistles of the 1400 but uses the free version of the software.

I would agree, the MicroLogix 1100 is a deal for learning AB controllers. If do buy that, you may find the the below site helpful. It's not a complete training, but there are some short videos that help with getting started with the MicroLogix1100. http://www.theautomationminute.com He also posts info about AB products and other helpful tips.

I don't know how "virtual" or not your setup is, but I'd be tracking backwards from the "not getting power to the motor" question. - Is the output circuit (motor starter wiring) correct? (probably not relevant if this is a virtual setup) - Are you getting power on your motor "starter"? (again probably not relevant in a virtual setup) - Is there an output connected to the motor "starter"? - Is this output on? - If not, what turns it on (and what is stopping it?) If you're still stuck, some screenshots may help us narrow it down some more

ASForrest, he's talking about the LogixPro training simulator, so it'll definitely not be a physical problem. white lightning, can you upload a screenshot of your program? I imagine it should all be able to fit into a single screen.

Ron Beaufort, a regular here on the forums, does a week long hands-on boot camp training for AB products, and the reviews have always looked excellent. http://www.ronbeaufort.com/main_frame_page.htm

I have talked to Ron and I'm going to try to make it down there the first of the year. It seems that is one of the best classes to go to from all the reviews.
