Anyone have experience with color sensors?

4 posts in this topic

I've inherited a mess of a project and am in need of assistance. I have an epson with an x-rite VC50 color sensor attached. The robot hits 4 points on the target (ABS plastic parts that come in shades of different colors) and determines if they're building with the correct parts based on control limits. The problem is, my target values are very similar and at times I get false passes. I honestly believe it's a limitation of the sensor. At this point I've 1. ensured the sensor is 1.5" away from the target and 2. ensured the sensor is at the recommended 30 degrees from the target - per the VC50 manual. I believe I'm in need of a color sensor with better resolution but I'm not sure where to look, any recommendations from you guys? Any way to get better readings with my current process (auxiliary light source maybe?) thanks!

i've evaluated some color sensors a while ago. all candidates i had access to, had short sensing range (approx 25-35mm) and spot with 2-3mm diameter. i ended using QC50 from banner engineering as it was compact, fast, true color, three outputs and reasonably priced.
