Kinetix 6500 - ip address changing procedure

7 posts in this topic

Hi, It's my first time with k6500, and I have a little problem. I need to change default ip adress of k6500. I tried to do this by RsLinx and Boot-DHCP server without success. Before using BOOT-DHCP I have changed k6500 to boot mode ( node: 888). Even with this settings I wasn't able to set static address IP and disable boot-dhcp. Boot-dhcp status said "Unable to service BOOTP requested from ...(MAC)". I hope many of you know what is the procedure to change default ip address of this module. I asked RA motion specialist how to do this, but received only that I need to change module mode to bootp (by setting node to 888) and then I will be able to set static address by boot-dhcp. Unfortunately it wasn't work. Any ideas? cheers, Przemek

Not sure if this will help, but I've found that RA's BOOTP utility works better when RSLinx is NOT running.

Examine the "Network Settings" for the BOOTP/DHCP Utility, which is where you enter the Subnet Mask and the Default Gateway values. The Default Gateway must be an IP address that is on the same logical subnet as the IP address you are trying to assign to the device. Otherwise, the BOOTP/DHCP Utility will return an error saying it cannot service the request. The "Disable BOOTP/DCHP" button in the Utility doesn't always work, and I have never been able to figure out exactly why. I tend to use the programming software or RSLinx Classic to disable BOOTP/DHCP, but I'm not familiar enough with the Kinetix 6500 to tell you exactly how.

Hi again, I've talked one more time with RA motion specialist about my issue. I explained point by point what have done and we found my mistake :). After assigning IP address to modul by Bootp utility I should disable bootp mode of module by the node no. switches (from 888 to other above 255). After that I should be able to use RsLinx to assign static IP address one more time. He said that is the same procedure like for PointOI or FlexIO. I'll try this sequence asap and put a feedback here. Maybe someone else will have the same problem as well. cheers, Przemek

Sounds like you got it. I used this setup to get me going, and it worked like a charm. The only think that I can add, is that the BootP utility has dialog boxes that can get hidden behind folders. I thought that it was hanging up, but it was just an acknowledge button that I was supposed to press. setting_IP_address_in_K6500 rev 2.pdf Edited by gbradley

I have a Kinetix 6500; I used Boot/P to install the IP Address. Everything was good until the power was cycled on and off. Lost the IP Address in the servo units. I was reading the Kinetix 6500: Procedure for Setting the Ethernet IP Address, but it shows RSLinx Classic Gateway and I am looking at RSLogix 5000.

Need direction.

Thanks

There's another parameter you have to set, to make sure it uses parameters as its source for IP address, basically disabling DHCP/BOOTP. The BOOTP utility has a button you can push to disable BOOTP, but it doesn't always work.
