Need replacement pot - 5K single turn

4 posts in this topic

Currently using this: http://www.digikey.co.uk/product-search/en?vendor=0&keywords=spru5021s28 but it keeps failing on us. Can anyone recommend a good drop in replacement? Want the same form factor so we don't have to redesign what it's going in. Thanks.

Do you have Radio Spares (AKA RS Components) over there? They are generally pretty good or you could find a Bournes distdirbutor - have used Bournes pots for many years with good success.

if it keeps failing on you, don't you think you may have another issue going on? are we talking about 1-2 failures or more then that? whats the application?

You did not provide any info other than link to a part. It is like saying this car keeps on crashing - is it cars fault? Can you please explain what exactly you are using it for? How? How exactly it fails? I am guessing it burns or wears out but maybe... shaft breaks and knob falls off...? How was it selected? Based on size or some other criteria? (linearity, tolerance, operating torque, noise...)? 5k potentiometer rated 0.5W is good for up to 50V and current up to 10mA (end to end only, not on wiper because wiper has smaller contact area and current density is greater). Also if used as "variable resistor", then rated power is proportional to factors such as percentage of travel from one end and maximum rated wiper current. Potentiometers are normally used as 'potentiometers' (dividing voltage) so tolerance is usually not important but linearity and rated power may be. You will see that rated life for example is often specified for wiper current less than 1 uA etc. This means using buffering stage with very high impedance. If it is not used for dividing voltage (ie. wiper current is significant or more than few uA) you better look closer into application and - datasheets. Worst thing is to think that potentiometer is same as resistor (it is - but end to end only). If it is burning, did you consider higher power units, in particular wire-wound such as: http://www.digikey.c...T2158-ND/203779 Carbon potentiometers are very fragile because the resistive element is very thin layer on some insulator. if it is wear, consider ones with plastic element (they have thick "sole" as a resistive element on which wiper glides). If it is shaft breaking, get one with bigger shaft. if it is travel, get one with continuous turning rather than stroke limited (your is 300deg) so overexcited operator can spin it all day long. so... what is it...?
