Help - RSLinx

8 posts in this topic

Aloha, I have been noticing in my RSLinx RSWho window that some of my SLC icons are changing. In past, the SLC's on the network would show the IP address and Device Type as SLC-5/05 and then the Online Name would be the Processor name. Lately, I have been noticing some of the processors are showing up with a weird icon with online name as the processor model number. See below attached image. Anyone know what is going on? Thanks so much. Grant Matsushige Instrumentation Specialist Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Corporation

Would you by any chance be in process of upgrading SLC to Control or Compact Logix. The icon you have highlighted is the ControlLogix icon IIRC.

No, no Control or Compact Logix. We've been running SLC's other than just that one Micrologix unit for years and years. Only recently have I seen that new icon show up and it's been happening over time, one by one.

I suspect it's an EDS registration issue. You'll see that all of the devices with Product Names instead of Program Names are Series C FRN10. That's not new by any means, but it might be newer than the other controllers on the network. When RSLinx Classic browses a network, it requests the Identity Object from each device it discovers. If the Identity Object codes (Vendor, Type Code, Product Code, Firmware Revision, Product Name String) match an EDS that's in the Registry, RSLinx can check with the EDS and show the correct icon. When RSLinx encounters a device without an EDS it recognizes, it will make an educated guess. It knows it used the ControlLogix protocol (EtherNet/IP) so it's a safe bet to show a 1756 series module icon. In fact, ControlLogix and CompactLogix devices will be labeled "1756 module" in this case. I suspect that because RSLinx doesn't recognize the SLC-5/05 controller, it just shows the string that it read from the "Product Name" string. Since it doesn't know that the device is an SLC-5/05, it doesn't know how to query the SLC for its Program Name. Program Names are not, as far as I know, part of the Identity Object. Try downloading and registering the EDS file for this model of SLC-5/05 and see if it changes the browse behavior of RSLinx Classic.

Ken, it looks like those in particular appear as if being viewed under the Ethernet/IP driver. Could it do that by having the IP addresses in the browse list appended with ":EIP"? Edited by OkiePC

Hello!

Did you solve the problem? I have the same problem.

Hello all - I just upgraded 11 SLC 5/04's to 5/05's and witnessed the issue with the Device name.  I noticed that all Ethernet-based devices show product ID in the "Online Name" column.  You don't see the device name unless you expand the backplane to the CPU.

I need the device name so I can update the new SLC's with the clock tool.  I was able to get it to work by adding the 5/05's IP addresses to the older ETH driver.  Now the names show up and I can map then through the clock tool.  Unfortunately, the Online Name is "1747L552" for all of the 5/05's in the clock tool - it appends (X) for each SLC.  Now all of my SLC's are updated.

Best,

Chris Roland

Click Communication - Configure Drivers - Select Ethernet Devices, Add new.

Enter a name like Job number, Machine project #, then enter IP address for that PLC

Also did you check the processor name for uniqueness?
