Posted 4 Feb 2012 I have a machine with a SLC family controller (5/03) processor. I am adding a tooling carriage to run a grinding tool in and out different distances. I will be adding a servo drive for this application. Does anyone have any recommendations on a drive. Was thinking about going with an old ultra 100 and 1746-HSTP1 but hate to go old technology. I am also looking for the most cost effective avenue.
Posted 4 Feb 2012 (edited) If looking for the most cost effective avenue, I strongly encourage you to forget about AB and use Yaskawa Sigma-5 SGDV series servo. It's fully compatible with 1746-HSTP1. Edited 4 Feb 2012 by Sergei Troizky
Posted 5 Feb 2012 I have had good luck with Mitsubishi MR-J3 servo drives.
Posted 8 Feb 2012 I would not go with any of the Ultra drives. Since those aren't AB's current technology, the price will continue to increase. I've had good luck with the Kinetix 300 drives. They are less expensive than a Ultra 3000 and have Ethernet/IP. You can set it up for Step and Direction to use with the SLC stepper card. If you ever decide to upgrade to EIP, it will be compatable.
