Dell Latitude E5510 Serial Port Poor Design

6 posts in this topic

Watch out for the E5510 Dell laptop. It's a flush mount serial port. You'll need to grind or change the DB-9 shell connector if you have the kind that overlaps the front to hold your d-shell in.

You could always use one of these: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch...name=AE10296-ND or similar product. I try to use one of them whenever I use the serial port of my work lap top to save wear and tear on the on board serial port. Tom

My mistake on the earlier link. I think what you would use is one of these http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch...17-E09AD-250-ND

Most serial ports are flushed these days. Using this one myself, it's as thin as possible so it doesn't get stuck easily when taking your laptop out of your bag. http://www.computercablestore.com/DB9_Port...e_t_PID994.aspx

I am using the E5500 and it is flipped 180 from what your picture shows. the ports are all on the left side (near ESC key) Whatever happened to keeping power and port connections in the back? or at least on the same side so you don't have the power cable coming in the right side and the comms going out the left. looks like a mess, not very convenient.
