Micrologix 1000 Training System

9 posts in this topic

Hi everyone. I'm a new member, and I've been reading Hugh Jack's PLC book to familiarize myself with PLCs. It's a really practical guide to much more than just PLCs! Now I would like to setup a system at home to practice with. The relatively inexpensive trainer systems that I see on the market have all digital I/O, but I would like to have an analog input channel or two. I'm considering purchasing a used 1761-L20BWA-5A Micrologix 1000. The PLC comes with a 1761-CBL-PMO2 cable, and I understand I can program it using the free RSLogix Micro Starter Lite software. There are two questions that I would like to ask the group: 1) Is there anything else I would need to be able to start using this PLC? I want to avoid getting surprised by any expensive items that I'm missing. 2) Is there anything I need to check to be sure the free RSLogix Micro Starter Lite software will work with this PLC (i.e. serial number, firmware version)? Thanks for the info. John

I think that only the L10-BWA is programmable with the free software.

This isn't exactly an answer to your questions, but I wanted to point out a new resource you may find useful as you learn more about the specifics of Allen Bradley PLC's. http://www.youtube.com/user/RonBeaufort These videos are actually a tutorial and not just an advertisement video like a lot of the others. For it to make sense, be sure to watch all 11 in order. Edited by arj3090

Hi John, 1) No, that is a great PLC to start with you can start by using the digital I/O then expand to the analog later as you have time and money, you can also simulate the inputs and just use the led's on the PLC for the outputs 2) good question... the old version of (RSLogix starter) did not work with the E series, I have tested the software with an A series, I would think that if it works with the A then it would work with any... if there is a B, C etc If you are going to build a PLC trainer.. search Ron Beauforts 'Hot Rod' that is a very nice trainer Good luck and welcome to the forum Mark

I tried the RS Logix starter with a series "e" L10, I got off of ebay. It did not work. My version of the free software, said, series f only. So, instead of buying a trainer for 250 bucks, which is limited to the L10. I bought the RS Logix Micro software. Which will program any Micrologix, for 130 bucks from AB. So now, I can write programs. "Bench test it". And if it doesn't work, go back in and watch it execute the program and try to figure out why it does not work. And if I can't figure out why, I ask for help in this forum. A lot of intelligent people here. They will help you, but, they will not do your work for you.
