Red Lion Displays and OPC

7 posts in this topic

Got a project coming up that will have a CLX PLC and a Redlion display. I think this is what I want to do, but wanted to check before I put my budget together. Connect the Redlion to the CLX via ethernet, then install the RedLion OPC server on a PC. I should be able to access all the Redlion tags this way, correct? Then I can pull the data from the OPC server into my PI historian. thanks, Ken

You will be able to access the NUMERIC tags. You can access basically everything but Strings. Regards, Dan

Historically, I would just RSLinx OEM to pull the data directly from the PLC, but based on past experience, I'm assuming that Red Lion's OPC server is cheaper than RSLinx OEM. I know I could use the Single User version and save a few bucks, but RSlinx OEM is our standard. Haven't got firm prices yet, will have to contact Redlion about the OPC server software. Our local Red Lion Rep SUCKS, they know nothing about the displays. I called them the other day to inquire about a simple process display. It's like talking to Cave men. I'm looking on line and quoting part numbers, they are thumbing through last years catalog and can't find what I'm talking about. I wish we had a direct account. The Distributor model isn't working for me.

That's surprising Ken. One of the things that sold me on Red Lion when I was evaluating them was that the salesman...not a specialist sitting back at the office...the actual salesman...pulled out a G310, opened up the software, show me how easy it was to add objects, and downloaded the program. When I asked questions, he could actually answer them. Dan, you should have Mike give some credit to Jim and the rest of the group at Jobe and Company for doing a great job at supporting your product.

Some times you get lucky, some times not.

Follow up: Red Lion employees saw my rant on the site, as a result Red Lion reps. have been in contact and we have worked out a solution. I must say that Red Lion support is outstanding.
