  1. Multiple protocols on a SCADA system?

    Not that I'm disagreeing with you, but isn't there normally some different protocols that work over serial at the same time in a Scada system? What I don't know is the degree to which they are different and if that really even matters? For example, we have one Enron Modbus device among numerous Modbus RTU devices, all using RS485. Also, Doesn't the Fisher Roc 503/407 etc., have its own proprietary protocol (which I think is a version of Modbus, if I'm not mistaken)? I know we have the proprietary Fisher protocol and normal Modbus RTU running over the same Scada system with no problems. What I don't know is when you throw something like the serial BSAP protocol into the mix. If all else fails, I did find a serial BASP to Modbus RTU gateway. It just seemed to me to be an extra layer and another expense if it wasn't needed. On the other hand, why make the gateway if multiple protocols will work over a serial network? Will research it some more and let you know what I find out. Thanks for the input!

    I'm stuck installing equipment in the field and trying to learn the ends and outs of a SCADA system from the wrong end. I came into this with an Ethernet networking background. My question is: Can multiple protocols work over a serial network, similar to the way they do over Ethernet? Example: Modbus RTU and serial BSAP? Radios are MDS and Freewave 900 Mhz. If it does work, any major downside to multiple protocols running at the same time? Thanks,
  3. Verified this on at least three different laptops. If you open up GE MDS programming software (you don't even have to connect to an MDS radio), the comm port is left locked when you exit the software, and the next thing you want to use that uses the same comm port won't work. The fix is to go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager > Comm ports and turn off the comm port and turn it back on. The comm port will work fine after that. Does anyone know of a batch script or little program that will release the comm port and free it up without having to go three layers deep into Device Manger and then having to click "no" to rebooting the computer on top of all of that? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Transporter_ii
  4. Can anyone recommend a Cygnet/Modbus RTU compatible weather station. Of course price does matter, but reliability and up time are the main issues I really care about for this project. Thanks, Jay Banks
  5. Freewave Radio repeaters?

    I have a question on Freewave radios. The Freewave guide states that in a point-to-multipoint setup, if a repeater is turned on, the bandwidth is reduced by 50%. (I kind of understand that, as it must be a similar setup to WDS in wireless ethernet). However, if multiple repeaters are in use, does it reduce bandwidth by 50% for each added repeater (e.g. Repeater 1 bandwidth is 50% loss, but behind repeater 2, it has only 25% bandwidth)? I'm not sure I'm even thinking right on this, which is why I'm asking? Thanks, Jay Banks
